Hi there. I have recently started going out with an INdian guy (from India). This guy is so religious and every day they do prayers, or Pooja. They do this one really strange prayer and frankly I have a hard time believing they are serious. Surely they must be joking! But nopes, for the past several years we have been dating they do the same thing every day.

The mother cooks some traditional foods and then she scrapes the whole thing into the toilet. Prays to some Shiva god, and claims it to be an offering! now I have seen people pray to their gods or idols, and even leave fruits in the temple... but NEVER had I observed food being flushed down the toilet!

We moved in together last fall, and now the "offerings" are getting ever more elaborate, to the point where he insists that I cook for hours every day only to flush it! Now he's asked for my hand in marriage, and I am willing, in all other areas he is perfect. But I can't handle all this flushing of food! Not to mention the plumbin

plumbing bills. They had to dig up our entire yard in March because of clogged piping! Yet just last night he bought caviar (russian black) to "offer" down the commode!

What do I do???

definitely sounds strange but i am sure some of our western traditions sound strange to them. I don't think the tradition or religious practices is the problem but what caught my attention is that you are the one doing the cooking for these offerings and the plumbng issue. My opinion on this is that he can offer anything to anyone that is not harmful to humans or pets but why are you the one cooking an offering to his gods? Isn't it part of the offering that the offerer is the one doing the cooking labors? Aside from that, the plumbing issue is something that has to be addressed. If you love this guy and are considering a long term relationship then you need to sit down with him and negotiate. Talk about how you feel about him and then set your boundaries on what you can accept and what's a deal breaker. And then have him decide if he can live without x and y ie flushing your cooking down the toilet.
Relationships are great because we get to be emotional and to some extent irrational but the one time it is imparative that we are rational and have our eyes open is when we start deciding to tie our lives to theirs. Make this negotiation what it is: a buisness deal. And the one rule about negotiations still prevails ' You can't get the best deal out of a negotiation if you aren't willing to walk away'

Your choice to marry this guy, your problem. But seriously: either he decides to "bring down" the offerings to some sort of symbolic gesture which satisfies his creeds without offending either you toilet or your plumbing or he does his offering at the temple. And by the way, millions of Indians don't even have toilets - and most would consider weird our use of toilet paper (they use their right hand). So this nonsense about using the toilet for offerings is either very recent - or just plain weird.

Realize that forgiveness from God comes only through Jesus Christ. You guys are wasting a lot of time and money for nothing.
