Good luck with it all.
I'm currently doing what you want to do. I to wish to study religion, I use the word study very loosely. I wish to be informed so what I am told and what I believe may not be the same. I would like to know that I have more than just media or propaganda to go by, if I am to express an opinion.
I have been told that going to places of worship are great for free books, but may not be totally unbiased.
Copies of the Bible and Quran are both easy to obtain and are relatively cheap ( I think this is a good thing. why should you pay to hear the word of God)
The other option is to look at some second hand book stores.
Good luck with your search. Just don't bag us Atheists for not believing as you do. We cop it enough, without extra. Some Atheists do deseve all they get, and feel free to give it to them.
Hope I helped.

I think you're going about this backwards. You are an adult. You've formulated your own values and morals and philosophies about life, right? You know in your heart what is truly important in your life. Go find the religion that mirrors your beliefs and can enhance them and bring you more fulfillment. You can't shove yourself into a box just because someone tells you it's the "true" religion. I tried doing that for years and it never worked. When I finally realized I was going against my own knowledge of what was right, I was able to find the path I sought. You should do the same. Yes, read a lot. Talk to people. But never waver in what you know is right, whatever that is for you. Don't be swayed by others' influences or threats.

Just wanted to say it is great to be open minded and want to research religions before making a choice. If you go on Amazon you can read reviews about books so type in your chosen religion and see what books they have to offer. Make a note of books that have the best ratings then see if there are any on ebay, you could save a fortune!
About 10 years ago I too started researching other religions as blind faith doesn't appeal to me. I wanted to get as many facts as possible. You will have loads of people telling you that their religion is right and that you need to read their religious texts, I found this annoying! Try not to take them to heart.
I ended up looking into paganism as I found mainstream religions to be suffocating, being told how to think, act etc. So I went to a pagan group, a moot, and met people. I did this after looking on the net to see what it was all about, due to the negative connations towards it. I found a group of intelligent and warm people willing to talk to me and not at me. Good luck, I hope you find what you are looking for!

Go to your local library and check out Holy books from other religions. You must always keep an open mind when studying the belief systems of others and keep in perspective how all views are shaped by our cultures. Pray for guidance and the ability to discern truth from fiction.

Don't think for a second that you have to decide on a religion. Agnostic is the way to go. Everything is possible, little to do with religion is believable so just live life and forget tales of people living in whales for 3 days.

Hinduism is the best and most tolerant.please check so many websites about Hinduism on net
Hindus believe that this supreme consciousness manifests as a trinity of creator(Brahma), preserver(Vishnu) and destroyer(Shiva)....This trinity then manifests with the help of Eternal Energy (Hindu call her Mother Shakti)... various angels (whom other people say we worship many gods)...to help in running of the universe

The final aim of a Hindu is to merge into God

Hinduism gives full liberty to its follower to worship God in any form they like, as Father, as Mother, as Beloved or as friend

Hinduism does not condemn Non-Hindus to hell

Hinduism do not believe in conversions by sword or reward

Hindus do not reject/condemn other faiths...as they believe all religions point towards truth...as all rivers rush towards ocean

Yoga and Meditation are the greatest gifts of Hinduism to the humanity

Hindus philosophy of religion is found in Upanishads which mainly deal in the mysteries of Universe, Life, Death and God

we belive all religions are true
"As the different streams having their sources in different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee."

Just attend a church of whichever religion you wish to research. After the service, ask for literature about their faith. They will gladly give it to you free of charge and usually there will be any number of people who are willing to answer your questions. The one thing that is standard is all faiths is that they all want to bring more people in to their way of thinking.

Well, the basics of Christianity can be summed up in two sentences:

1. Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected from the dead.

2. That death and Resurrection somehow mean my salvation.

It is really a very simple religion.
