It is a reinforcer. Any repetitive ritual will reinforce belief in something, whether it is religion, cult or sports fanaticism.

self hypnosis. You can support your belief in many things this way. If you were to start complaining about life every day, and look at everything bad you would eventually have a negative attitude. If you were to start blaming a group for a particular action and repeated such blame eventually you would be convinced that all bad things come from that group. If you pray to a God on a daily basis, eventually such practice will support your belief in God.

It certainly can support your personel belief in God in a couple of ways. Number one, praying is talking to God like you would your dad. Why would you do it if you didn't believe. Number two, watching your petitions come to pass. You talk to God and He hears you. He talks to you and it is inspired upon your heart. The inspiriation is confirmed by manifestations of the conversation. It is a faith action and will excercise your faith and make it stronger. Remember always talk to God either in petition or just to say I Love you, but you must believe that He is there to recieve into manifestation what you might have asked for. Pray believing.

Some people need to believe that someone is listening to their cries, pleas and needs, and that that someone has the power to help them. When situations are desparate they have to believe that a 'miracle' might be sent to them. So prayer, in turn, has to be said to a 'being' that can understand their needs, right? That is why that being must be a God.

You talk to God, he talks back...that's what prayer is. He doesn't talk back as in "Hey, how you doing? Yeah, I saw that, too". But he gives you peace that has his trademark on it and he shows you things that you would not normally see.
If you don't believe in God, seriously, tell him yourself, ask for help, tell him how you feel. It may feel stupid at first, but after a while, it brings out your emotions at the very least.

There are so many people who are telling you that prayer means you believe in God but that's not the answer you're looking for I don't think. I think you're looking for an answer as to why you have to pray if you believe in God and what is it accomplishing. Praying to most people is putting them closer to their God and to others it is just to show their faith as you've seen in your answers. It doesn't really help anything as far as faith goes as long as you believe that you are doing what you think is right in God's eyes. I'm not a believer but my childhood was emersed in the teachings of God and the bible having a strong baptist grandfather and all and not once did I ever see him pray that I can recall because he believed that his appreciation for God was in the acts of kindness and rightness he showed toward people and himself everyday. He didn't have to get down on his hands and knees and show thanks to God as you would a tyrant because he didn't believe God is a tyrant but a being to help guide us through our lives on the right path. I hope that answered your question

If your prayer is addressed to God, that is a genuine indicator of belief, or at least searching for.

Prayer is the form of communication with God, it takes faith to believe that he is listening, most of religion and our God requires FAITH.
