I am a Hindu, but I will answer this and it is up to you to accept it or not. But I assure you that I am unbiased and am telling the truth.
See, Buddha was indeed an Avatar of Vishnu. Buddhism came at a time when people had lost all idea of what the Vedas were about, and were sacrificing animals as well as eating their flesh. All this is absolutely against Sanatana Dharma, which forbids Non-Vegetarianism, Illicit Sex, Alcoholism and other such activites.
Not only the Srimad Bhagavatam. Another Text, the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, states that the Avatar of Vishnu, Buddha came from the Daivaperumal Idol of Maha Vishnu, located in Vanamamalai. Indeed, the Temple still stands today. The Divya Prabandham gives 108 Divya Desams (Divine Destinations), each Divya Desam having its own significance. Daivaperumal's significance is that He is Lord Buddha.
So, Lord Narayana incarnated as Buddha. He decided that these violent people would never accept God, and since those who don't believe in God should not get a Divine Vision of Vishnu directly, the Avatar should be an Atheist. Lord Vishnu as Buddha mislead people into rejecting the Vedas. This ensured that they wouldn't sacrifice animals by misinterpreting the texts. He made them peaceful.
Buddha claimed to neither believe nor disbelieve in God. He simply said, 'Don't Care'. And due to this, Atheists prostrated before Buddha. Thus, even though they didn't believe in Narayana, by touching the divine feet of Lord Buddha, they were indirectly surrendering to Him. Thus, He saved Atheists from Sin.
Buddhists do not know the events that happened afterwards. Lord Narayana created a step-by-step process for God realisation. After people had converted to peaceful Buddhism, Adi Sankara came and preached Advaita Vedanta. This Philosophy says that there is a formless God, without attributes, who is spread and fragmented in the material energy and hence the souls and God are not separate. Adi Sankara was an incarnation of Shiva, who is a Devotee of Vishnu and was sent to make atheists accept the Vedas again.
Advaita Vedanta is actually a disguised form of Buddhism in Vedic Terminology. Hence, people accepted the Vedas again. This was the 2nd step.
The last step came with Vishishtadvaita. Bhagavad Ramanujacharya, incarnation of Adi Sesha, preached of a God, the Paramatma, as one having attributes and being separate. He gave the full vision of truth, that Narayana is Supreme, all demi-gods are subservient, etc. He also organised the modes of Service to the Lord. Hence, the mission was completed.
Even today, Buddhism exists in places that would have been atheistic if it weren't for Buddha. As India consisted of more Theists, once Vishishtadvaita came, Lord Narayana decided Buddhism need not flourish in its country of origin.

Buddha is not an incarnation of Vishnu. It is not a part of Hindu religion. It is separate. In orginal version of Hindu scriptures there is only 10 incarnations. When Buddhism was fast spreading the inteligent Hindus made Buddha as an incarnation. And that was the end of Buddhism.Buddhism is freedom fro from wants and enlightenment. In true Buddhism ,enlightenmment is the goal.Any enlightened is Buddha.Buddha never said he is God.Since a religion cannot survive with out "an all powered God" later on Buddha was Made God.
Buddhism is a simple relgion. It was a revolt against vedic culture, animal sacrifice and caste system.

All I can say is that some Buddhists themselves are being too fundamental/extreme about their own views...
Let's look at this from another perspective. As Guru Nanak had taught; "There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim" (in Punjabi, "nā kōi hindū nā kōi musalmān")... How many of us do realize that? Its the reality of mankind that needs to be reviewed, not religious labels and terms.

Reincarnation of souls is anti thesis of evolution as such no logical background except a few concoctions. The governing principle which the various species are following is that the the specy which is not progressing must perish slow but cannot retard back to another specy or it should excel in its own form according to the envirnment. The beasts and other insects, birds and animals have neither perfect souls nor ability to express their mind or ideas by themslves as such no animal can testify reincarnation phenomenon but as far as the human beings are concerned case histories of such experiences should be wide spread but Hindus qoute a few example which are neither verifable but also vage as such do not fall into a category of making basis for a principle. If critically reviewed that is best situation for describing the similiarity between the prophets due to the similiarity in their messages and their experience with situations and people confronting them.Since all other souls except human souls are perfect;they shall perish and not continue but human souls came into being for sublimer objectives they shall transcend to new phase of spiritual life to achieve higher form.

You would have to accept the existence of Vishnu to admit Buddha was a reincarnation of him...most Buddhists do not believe in all the manifestations of the one 'God' force...they just believe in the Energy...

Yes, as one answer put it, just accept thast you do not have the only truth, because you have no truth in the matter of God. To say that all truth is acceptable is like saying that if I believe the world is flat, it is, because I believe it. There is absolute truth and it can only be found in the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ. By the way, 2+2=4 is also an absolute truth. It is immutable just like our God.

If you want to believe this, then believe it. But do not attempt to force your opinions on others. Do not insist that yours is the only truth. This is the complaint so many have with the fundamentalist Christians on this site.
Live your faith as you choose -- but if you choose to be Buddhist, live it as a sacredly as Siddhartha, not as a fundamentalist. If you choose to be a Buddhist fundie, you will be living a lie, for you will be living a consummate dichotomy.
You need to let this go. Get over it and move on your path the way you choose.

Dear Hindu Brother, whether many Buddhists refute this claim is really of no consequence to our practice; perhaps there are some who accept it - I do not know.
What seems of importance to me is what matters in this moment only, and whether this moment lies within the path of positive karma for all beings.
This is my understanding.

Buddism evolved as a reformation of hinudism, and it was against the attrocities commited in the name of caste...
even though the caste is becoming slowly irrelevant in india, it is better if buddism remain as buddism,
Rather the christians and muslims whose ancestors were converted either forcefully, coercively or without understanding the truth of dharmic religions, can come back to either of the dharmic religions(hinduism, buddism mainly)
