My favourite is ancestry.com

Do you mean a family tree program to compile one, a place where you can see other's trees, or a site where you can find your own?
Ancestry.com gives you most of these options. Some are free but others you will have to pay for.
It helps if you say which country you are in as some sites are specific to certain countries.
If you want to find ancestors and fellow researchers in the UK there are sites like www.ancestry.co.uk, www.genesreunited.com and www.ukgid.com
If you want to find stuff in the US register with Ancestry.com (free) and look through the Surname boards. Also familysearch.org has tons of old records to do with many different countries.

The best way is simply to start with your own family. If you want to do it on the computer, you can download PAF (Personal Ancestral File), which is free genealogy software at http://www.familysearch.org under Order/Download Products. I imagine you can pick it up pretty quick because it is very user-friendly. Then talk to your parents (and grandparents if still alive) and get as much information as you can from them including names, dates, and places.

Here are a few online resources for you to use:

http://www.familysearch.org - Probably the best free online resource.

http://www.ancestry.com is one of the best but has a hefty subscription fee (for most of its databases).

Also, you can check the surname message boards for your surname at:

http://genforum.genealogy.com
http://boards.ancestry.com

For links to helpful sites, you will want to take a look at:

http://www.cyndislist.com

And finally for a lot of different resources:

http://www.rootsweb.com

For grave records:

http://www.findagrave.com

It won't all be free but it's worth it.

Good luck,
Dave

ive found that on the whole ancestry.co.uk is the best provider on genology information on the internet, well as far back as in 1841 census. After that, as above said www.familysearch.org or parish records are the only way to go. As i am from the uk, i dont know how you go back further in the us.

I started with www.genesreunited.com and www.ansestry.co.uk. If you want to go further back than 1839 www.familysearch.org is a must. www.freebmd.org.uk is also useful for the uk.
www.rootschat.com is a good resourse with lots of helpful people and advice.

There are also websites for genealogy societies for each state, for counties, for cities, for courthouses, cemeteries, various wars (i.e., Civil War, Revolutionary War, etc.) and so many others.
Don't forget your local library. Not only do libraries have genealogical sections with books, they also have access to www.ancestors.com and others.

The one site I consistently suggest is
www.cyndislist.com
Cyndi has collected genealogy resources for over 10 yrs. If you are new, PLEASE take some time to browse her beginner section, which has many good tips.
