The padding is cut back to allow room for at least one tack strip and a piece of “z” bar. Be sure that the “z” bar is at least 3/8” from the tile edge. This allows the carpet to be folded over and under the “z” bar.

Magic. Or you put a tack strip along the edge of the tile but a fraction of an inch away and pull the carpet across the strip and fold it down into the gap so the folded edge is touching the carpet.

You can purchase transition pieces about 2" wide made of stronger material that looks like tile. You can butt the carpet up to that or up to a straight tile edge as well.

I would definitely check with a professional carpet installer before trying any of these suggestions. Some sound good, but as you said you don't want to be wrong and end up with a strip.

I've use a 2 way tape, i make sure my carpet is completely smooth, no bumps anywhere, i do one side at a time, i put on the floor first, then slowly place rug on top and press down, when you get to the corners remember you have to have it lose cause you are putting tape down and you need your corners lose. once you have all sides done, then press down. Once down it doesn't come up. Hope this helps.
