It's a true story, according to most of the biographies I have read.

You certainly are a scholar. You must be studying incessantly.Gandhi most assuredly wanted to teach his followers and, in fact the whole world, that sex was an unnecessary act, just a habit, a bad habit at that. He wanted to discourage his followers from continually having sex, which he believed to be lustful.
His involvement with his niece is factual, but the details of how he was trying to make his point are unclear. He obviously made love to her.....or did he? Too much of the incident is left unclear. Perhaps in his infinite wisdom, that is what he intended.....for his followers to figure it out for themselves.
You're very intelligent. Do you agree? What's your opinion?

Since you only heard it chances are someone made it up.
Try not to believe everything you hear or even read.
If you study the life of Gandhi as in a historical record or perhaps a record of his life written by his companions, you can then judge for yourself if what you heard is likely to be true or not.
In short I would suggest to you it is not true.

I believe her name was Manu and that he was very open about sleeping in the same bed with her as some sort of test but that's about all I can recall...I don't think they actually did the thing associated with the birds and the bees...I could be wrong on this...

He was a little pervert from documented records, he was also a racist. Many people refuse to accept those as fact, but they are also living in their own little world. There are multiple records of him be a racist.
As far as him sleeping with his niece, I never heard of that one.

I don't know but in those days it was common for people in Europe to marry their nieces. Hitler almost did.

He felt he had overcome the sexual desire and laying with his niece was a test for himself. Those who do not have eyes to see, only see perversion!
