Actually, I'm more likely to think that a black person, in my neighborhood at least, is a Christian. There are so very many Christian churches here, which is a mixed neighborhood.
Christians believe that other religions are more nearly like their own than they really are. For example, if you explain that Buddhists do not have a god as such, they simply do not comprehend. If you explain that the terms "worship" and "prayer" have very little relevance to some people, they assume you mean atheists or at most, agnostics. To some extent, it is "playing the odds," as the majority of Americans are at least nominally Christian, and many other countries it is even more pronounced, since they have a state religion. I suppose the assumption is as rational as believing that all Arabs are Muslims (they are not), all Indians are Hindus (they are not), or all Japanese are Buddhists (they are not). The majority in each of these countries probably does fit the stereotype.

This is very true. I am Muslim, but I am white (Turkish). So for choir if we had to sing at a Church, my twin brother and I would fit right in. And because the father/pastor there assumed that no Muslim would be in a Church, let alone be in choir, he did say something that was untrue and demeaning about Islam, but we didn't say anything and didn't want to make a commotion. Also, when the basket for donations was being passed around, my mom (who was sitting in the pews) gave a rather large donation out of respect, much more than most other Christians in the Church gave.
So anyways, yes, pretty much everyone that sees me assumes I am Christian, and when they find out I am Muslim, they give a rather confused, rude, awkward, sort of hateful stare.

Duh? Because most are. Not to hard to figure out. But let me say I see these type of questions all the time and I wonder just where it is that people even care that much about what someone's religion is?
I have friends that are Jewish and how do I know that? Just because I know, I don't ask them and they don't ask me.
Same with my Christian friends, I have friends that I have known for 20 or more years, I believe they are Christians but I could not tell you if they are Catholic, Baptist, etc.
Where do people live and work, where this subject is so important? I seldom talk about religion and even more seldom ever bring the subject up.

because Christianity developed in Europe, and wiped out most other religious beliefs.... there is a high chance that somewhere in any white persons heritage, there will be contact with christianity. The areas in Europe which are now Islamic, were conquered by the Turks, after this great uniform Christian church had been established.

Have these Christians actually called you a Christian or are you assuming that they assume you are Christian? You didn't tell us what these white people say to you that makes you think they assume something.

Kinda like Why do people think all Atheists are smart? Its just a belief and it has nothing to do with facts. Atheists for the most part are stupid people trying to make up for failing in the intellectual world. At least they are smarter than Christians because they don't believe in such made up BS.

generally speaking white people are Caucasian, generally speaking Caucasians from Europe (including Britain's former colonies) are either Christians or were raised as Christians
pretty logical in a generalist way
census in most white countries support this
