Southwestern Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh area has many fine hospitals with national reputations, and easy access to rural areas just outside the city.

I live in Virginia and it's basically the exact opposite of California. Western Virginia is mostly mountains, farms, and low populated towns. Very quiet and laid back. I don't live in that part but I go there every year. Eastern is mostly towns and medium sized cities where most events that come to Virginia occur. ex; concerts, shows, etc. A lot of it is still mostly 'country life' I guess. I live in a town that's kind of half country and half modern. I think Virginia is a good place to raise your kids. It still has dangerous parts but so does every other state. There's also a lot of colonial things here and a few theme parks that you could take your kids to like Busch Gardens Europe, Kings Dominion, and Water Country.

But yeah, Virginia is anything but fast living.

Try Alabama, plenty of small towns between Brimingham and Huntsville where you could find a job working in a Hospital and be able to lead a slower paced comfortable life with your children.

Pennsylvania's a nice place. My family and I was able to visit there a few months back, and my mom instantly fell in love with the place. We stayed at her childhood friend's home somewhere in Red Lion (i think), and the place is just amazing. I mean, endless blue skies, rolling hills of green, birds chirping, white picket fences, i mean, the whole shebang. what's great about that place too, is that the school's not too far, and Wal-Mart's like 20 mins. away. And i think we passed by a hospital not too far from their place also.. hope this helps : )

Many places. But not with California's weather, cultural resources, and spectacular mountains/seashore. There's a reason why California is popular and expensive.

The Southeast would be my recommendation. Rural Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia. Your salary will be lower. But so will the cost of living, particularly housing.

Kansas, a lot of houses for sale, hospitals begging for help. You would appreciate the towns under 5,000 people to find the family friendly lifestyle.

Well my friend, I have been looking for such a place for thirty years. If you find a place like that, email me. I thought about New Mexico because it is beautiful; at least to me; but everyone one I know says because of the water situation it isn't that great. Montana would be good if I could survive the winters. Not sure where the best place to attempt this would really be. Hope you find your Shangri-la and if you do, please feel free to email me and let me know what you think of your new place. Thanks and good luck.
