There is a kit that includes a solution for dissolving ear wax from Murine (the eye drops people), called just Ear Wax Removal system. It includes a small bottle of solution and a small rubber ball syringe for washing out with water. To use it you lay down or tilt your head to one side and put 5 drops in the ear and wait, then turn your head and let it drain out. It seems to work pretty good - can be a little messy, I use it before washing up.

If you have an ear infection, you're probably going to need an antibiotic to clear it up, which means a trip to the ear/nose/throat doctor. Blockage could be from the infection itself or ear wax. Water by itself will not clear out ear wax. For a normal ear wax problem, there are several methods for removal, such as hydrogen peroxide, or some over-the-counter preparation, but if your ear is infected then the problem is more serious and will probably need a doctor's care. If you don't see a doctor, the infection will eventually go away, but the ear may still be blocked, so you're just going to be better off making that appointment. Use Tylenol, or some such painkiller, in the meantime. Do not stick any more Q Tips inside your ear canal, it's dangerous! Using Q Tips on the ear is okay IF you only use them on the outside area of the ear --- never stick them into the ear canal. First, they can compact wax and make that problem worse; but a further and more serious problem is that they can scratch/cut the skin inside the ear canal --- and if that area is cut it becomes really prone to infection (I found this out the hard way). Also, don't cup your hand and use it as a suction cup. You can actually damage the ear drum with this practice. If you're sure that you have an infection (pain is the key ingredient there) then take a painkiller, rest, leave the ear alone, and make that doctor's appointment as soon as you can.

Do you live in the UK? If so go to your neaest Boots chemist and ask for a product called Audicleanse - do not be fobbed off with anything else. You will probably need to use it a couple of times over a period of a week but it is the only thing that worked for me.
