My 14 year old son sometimes get a painful rash just where the earlobe touches his face. It is wet and then it forms a scab or crust which he is tempted to rub off, but it forms again. I will take him to a dermatologist but want to know if there are any other ways to deal with this.

Honestly, no. Just because I know what it's like to be 17 and think you want things pierced. What you want when you are 17 and what you want 20 years from now will be totally different. Having your ear lobe pierced isn't that bad I guess, but my husband had his done when he was a kid, and still has a scar from it. We laugh about him having his ear pierced, and thankfully he never got anything else pierced or tattooed because of his profession. (He's a therapist) While piercings and tattoos are very common these days, you really have to look at what kind of career you want in the future and plan accordingly. Honeslty, I find guys that are not tattooed and that don't have piercings much more attractive. That's just my personal preference though.

Try a topical steroid like betamethasone, if you think it has superimposed bacterial infection, try a steroid/antibacterial/antifungal topical cream or ointment combination...there are lots of those out there. sometimes it can take several weeks for it to completely dry off... keep the area clean... make sure he keeps his hair short and away from that area...and no earrings!
