I loves my crabbing. There are many types of Crab Traps out there, Some very expensive, some not so expensive.
The best inexpensive Crab Trap I have found are the Crab Rings. They cost about $20 to buy, or can be rented at bait shops for around $5 per day.
Crab Rings are a two rubber coated steel rings. One Ring is larger than the other. Wire webbing is in the center of the small ring. Cloth netting goes from the smaller ring to the larger ring. A rope attaches to the larger Ring. You attach your chicken or fish parts to the wire mesh in the center of the smaller ring.
When you set them down, the larger ring goes around the smaller ring making it easy for crabs to walk onto the wire mesh and eat the bait in the center of the small ring. When you pull up on the rope, the top ring comes up as far as the netting between the two rings allow, forming a basket with the crabs in it.
Then you pull like crazy to get the basket / Crab Rings to the surface before the crabs can swim out. Yes, they swim side ways and will swim out if you pull slowly.
Sort out the females, and small ones, then throw the trap back in and wait another 15 - 20 minutes, then repeat the process.
The best expensive trap is a small version of the trap used by commercial fishermen. It is heavy and cost more than all the crab you will eat in your life. However it does have the advantage of not requiring attending. Just plop it in the water and leave it for hours or days if you prefer. The crabs enter and can't get out until someone releases them.
The best crab bait is fish parts or squid parts, Chicken and Turkey Legs also work well, however If present, Harbor Seals and Sea Lions will gobble your bait down. Wrap your bait in chicken wire before you tie it to the wire mesh in the bottom of the small ring. Seals and Sea Lions don't like the feel of the wire when they bite into it. After a couple of trys, they will leave your bait alone.

Many ways, yet my three favorites are:
Four-door crab trap with chicken legs as bait.
Chicken leg tied on a string and use a scoop net. You'll know when you have a crab on the line with the line starts to straighten out. Slowly bring in the line, the crab won't let go until it reaches the surface. That's when you use your scoop net to get the crab.
Also bait, live or dead, on a circle piece of wire placed in a trap.

you will need a roll of string, some chicken(necks), and a long handle net to scoop the crabs as you pull them in.
They sell these star shaped crab traps, just tie some bait in there,
you will be looking to catch the crabs in more of a tidal river, someplace with lower salinity than the ocean..........if you are trying the ocean try near jetty's or piers.......not the open surf

Crab traps, mason's line and chicken parts. Use bailing wire to hold the bait in place inside the trap.
