Sukhumvit is a good place to stay to be near shopping and nightlife. And the skytrain is very handy in lieu of taking a taxi. Most shopping is done near Siam Square, where you can find MBK, "Siam" shopping malls, Central World Plaza and Pratunam and Platinum malls. From Sukhumvit Soi 1 to Soi 12 are many night spots. From Soi 11-39 are more restaurants than night spots except for Soi Cowboy or Soi 23 near the intersection of Asoke Road and Sukhumvit Road.
You would probably want to stay near Sukhumvit Soi 1-19 or 2-14, the sois are outlet streets and along Sukhumvit Road they don't quite alternate evenly. And I would stay at a hotel that is more than a block or 5 minutes from Sukhumvit, it is just safer. Some of the Sois at night can get very dark.
You did not say if you are coming with just men or with a woman. So, what I have written is with both sexes in mind.
If you don't like the fumes and the noise, try along Ratchadapisek Road which is along the Subway. I stay at the hotels along this road, I like the openness of the hotels, i.e. no building right next to it. At most it is a 17-20 ride to Sukhumvit Station which connects to the Asok station of the skytrain. I have stayed at the Emerald Hotel, Grand Mercure Fortune Hotel, and Chao Phya Park hotel. There is one large mall, Central Lad Prao is north of these hotels, 4 story mall and similar to the Siam malls. There is also a few smaller malls geared towards the locals. At the Grand Mercure Fortune Hotel there is the Fortune Mall and business offices. 4 story with a Tesco/Lotus store(Like a small Walmart), some souvenir shops, some clothes, IT/Computer floor, some electronics. It is direcly connected to the Hotel. It can be quite convenient if you need some toiletries.

sukhumvit road is fine, anywhere you want johnny can't wait for you to get here, try nana or soi cowboy area, soi 3 to up 55 would be just great for you. Close to the sky train.
