1st, don't tell me to keep the cat inside, this is what I do with my cats, that's why I have no experience with outdoor cats. This one is a feral kitten I rescued because it had a problem, and I took it to the vet to have surgery, spayed it and some friends will take it but they will keep it outdoors. The other option is to go back on the streets.
My question is, how to approach the issue? The kitten is 3 months old, but very timid, at least at first. We went to the new house, she tried to run away and hide. Then she would sit on my lap, but not move, although in my house she is very playful. I suggested that they keep her in a room for a few days, and then keep her on the balcony before letting her outside. How long should she be kept in the house? How do they learn to feel that this is home and not run away, even if they are in the garden?

They need to keep her indoors for at least a week, and take her out in a leash to get her accustomed to the property. They should put a little house with a blanket in it outside for her,and out her food and water dishes right next to the door, along with some toys and catnip. When making the transition, they need to leave her out for longer periods each day,but they should sit with her at first, until she feels secure. They could also build an enclosure for her to go into,at least at night,so she would be safe ( a dog kennel with a roof is fine.) Or,you could try to find her a different home where she will be kept indoors. It would be a shame for her to go and get lost or run over after you rescued her.Why won't they keep her in,especially with winter approaching?

Hi there, firstly, I am not going to tell you to keep her inside. If a cat has never been outside then it doesn't know any better and that is fine. If however you have a cat who has been used being outside, and you try to keep it indoors, this in my opinion, is cruel.
Firstly you are absolutely right when you say, "keep her in one room until she settles". Once your friend has built up trust and friendship with the cat, then she can start to introduce her to the rest of the house.
Once the cat is confident enough around the house and trusts her new owners the way she trusts you, then what I would do is, let her out but try to make sure she cannot escape, keep and eye on her, and have some nice chicken or her favourite treat to hand. Keep giving her tit bits, and make sure she knows your friend is nearby, patience and trust is what's needed here.
Best of luck with your cat, and I hope I have helped in some way!

Keyword here is "Trust"
Until that kitten develops trust in someone it will always run to hide if scared.
I found love, mutual respect (and kitty treats) work wonders.

unless you live next to a major road you should allways let a cat outside espeslly if it is ferral like yours, cats are nautrull hunters and are kind of nocturnal so you need to let them out side to hunt, and go to the toilet and sunbathe (like my cat does) it also saves you money on cat litter
