well. i think New Yorkers get a bad rep as being rude or aggressive or something, but i guess it comes with the territory, i mean, New York is a tough place to live in. personally, i'm wary of New Yorkers and at the same time admire their "guts-siness".
i had the pleasure of going there a few months back for vacation and prior to coming there friends of ours (Americans as well, not from New York though) said that we should be careful because crime rate in the city is high, there's a lot of pickpocketers or 'gangsters' on the streets, blah blah blah... but when i got there, it wasn't so bad.
the very first day we arrived, we took a taxi from Port Authority to go to my grandmother's apartment in Queens, and my uncle (who lived in New York but now in Vegas) warned us about cab drivers who'll probably rip us off because we're tourists. so i guess, we heeded to his advice. we had a Middle-Eastern man as the driver, and, at first, it seemed that he was slightly irritated at the sight of our luggage and trying to figure out how to fit it in the trunk. but nevertheless, we got in, and told the directions to the apartment, and tried so hard to sound like we're from New York.
then his phone rang, and he started to speak in Jewish or something, (which was fine) and then he sais something in english about a guy who previously rode his cab, just an hour before us, and left his cellphone there. then he said he'll meet him up at the corner of 42nd and 7th (i think). and it turns out, that's the guy who left his cellphone he's talking to. then like he told, he stopped the cab and lowered the window on the passenger seat in front, and a guy approached the cab and he handed over the phone.
then he started talking to my dad about it, explained the whole situation (my dad was sitting in the passenger seat in front), and i found it really nice. my thought was like: "Huh, he's not so bad after all".
in addition, when we're in queens, and couldn't find the right street of the apartment, he offered to take the time and help us, i guess he realized we ARE really tourists. so there.

As seen from France and considering that I never went to New York, though I lived in United States for close to 4 years: busy people.

Loveliest people around!
I went there on holiday in July. And we were trying to find the Rockefeller center and a man actually stopped gave us a map and then walked us to the Rockefeller!! I mean how much nicer can you get!
Everyone also said "Have a nice day" It just makes you smile!
In England every one is rude and since going to New York i have started to say to people have a nice day! As it's just polite and people have actually said thanks to me for saying that!
I also love the accent!
Obviously i did come across a few rude people..E.G An old lady telling someone to f**k off and get out her way but that was just funny!

Not all New Yorkers are rude. Probably would just depend on what part of New York they were from. New York is NOT all city! There is a lot of 'country' in New York state. Very pretty state to.

I've heard it said that we Californians think of New Yorkers as 'stuffy' or 'somewhat formal' and snobbish. On that note, I've also heard New Yorkers say we Californians are 'too laid back', 'aren't disciplined' and 'never take anything seriously'. They think of us as "un-cultured"!
