I just got a dvd recorder/vcr combo deal today. Now I am not the best when it comes to this stuff though!
It asks for recording mode (ep, lp, sp, etc). Can I put this into any mode I want, or does it have to be the same mode as the dvd-rw I bought? The length of time is extended when this record mode is changed, and the dvd-rw I bought says its sp and 2 hrs. I want to record a 4 hr movie, so can I put it into the mode that shows 4 hrs on the dvd recorder and have it record the whole movie or am I limited to 2 hrs of record time no matter what?
Also, I am recording from my Directv DVR to the dvd recorder. If I turn the volume down on my tv set while I am recording, when I playback the recording will the audio turn down in the recording? And what if I turn my tv off altogether but have the DTV DVR and dvd recorder power on? Will it still record? My cabling goes from the DTV DVR to the dvd recorder and then to the tv.

1. You can choose any mode. But when you play the recorded disk in different machines you mite face an issue. When the disk is done in LP mode every player wont recongnise it.

2. TV Volume does not effect the recording.

3. If the DTV is connected to the DVR before the tv then the TV does not have to be on. But the DTV and the DVR must be on.

The ep/lp/sp settings are quality settings, with ep being lowest and sp highest. They are trying to compare these settings with those on a VCR, where SP is 2 hours (on a T-120 tape), LP is 4 hours, and EP is 6 hours. I don't know if this matches directly on the DVD recorder (check the manual?).

The settings on your TV should have absolutely no effect on the DVD recorder. Go ahead and turn it off, start your transfer, and go to bed.
