Dual exhaust with an X pipe is the all around best for power, torque, speed, performance.

Size matters.. Most people will only need 2", 2.25", or 2.5" dual pipes. Go bigger than you need and you can hurt performance

Dual Exhaust Vs Single Exhaust

It does depend on the application and car you are putting it on.

In general, Dual Exhaust performs better. You can have straight dual, Dual with an H-Pipe (Connect the 2) or Dual with an X-pipe, which is the best performing of the three.

I have single exhaust on my dart, because it has the HP Exhaust setup on it, as it is original, I keep it that way. In this case, it is specially tuned to the car, which can only have exhaust exiting one side anyways.

I have 3" dual exhaust on my 68 Plymouth for most flow out of the 440.

dual exhaust is recommended on larger engines because of the need to exit exhaust gasses from the high output motor, where as if you have a small motor such as a 4cylinder honda or dodge, there is no need for dual exhaust and no improvment whatsoever by switching. many times a small motor will have a substantial loss of power, and idling ability because of too big of pipes and mufflers causing a loss of backpressure. backpressure is the amount of air pressure coming out the motor and thru the pipes and this is critical to performance. I would keep a single exhaust single but enlarge the exhaust pipes a 1/2 inch in diameter, paired up with a free flowing catalytic convertor would be the best bet for gains in power. as for a dual system, I would install a H pipe into the exhaust, again install free flowing catalytic convertors and performance mufflers like a flowmaster.

RE:
What is better single exhaust or dual exhaust?

Assuming your talking about v8's duals are definetly better. But you have to choose the right diameter pipe and the best exit point for the exhaust for the type of vehicle and type of racing and or vehicle use.X pipes and h pipes are proven performance enhancers. In my experience the least bends with a side exit in front of the rear tires using flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers makes the most power even more than open headers. The prettier the job with the pipes bent in towards the driveshaft and clean loops over the rearend the lower the power gain in my experience.I have tried several different exhaust configurations on the same vehicle and it is quite surprising the amount of difference an exhaust can make.

defiantly the duel exhaust.. speaking from experience dude you def want to get a magnaflow there the best... i have a v8 stang and i just put on a duel exhaust and it just makes the car sound and run better. Also if you got some extra cash getting some new headers while your doing the exhaust is not a bad idea. but the guy above me is right. the cheapest and most effective things you can do to get air into the engine are to get a cold air intake and if your feeling good i would suggest a 75mm throttle body and big lube tube it adds 18-20 horses and makes the exhaust sound that much better. well good luck

Duals are ALWAYS better....But what is the goal? More speed, more efficeincy or more noise?

If you want to add performance, there are other things you may want to do first. But if you add a dual exhaust, you always have to rejet and tune the carb to get the maximum performance.

It's all in what you want more noise an if you don't have enough Eng than duals won't make a noticeable difference except in your wallet>??An if computerized your comp== might lean the Eng out as exhaust issues>>?

dual exhaust with a cross pipe. no glass packs. turbo type mufflers and all the way out the back. muffler shops in idaho wont do this kind of mods. they like single exhaust, cat back large diameter pipe. smog rules and such. vintage cars get exceptions.
