My absolute maximum budget is 1,000. I shoot lots of photos of dogs, as I work at a boarding kennel. They are almost always moving. I also enjoy pictures of landscapes, and will do some sport photography as well. I have researched the Panasonic DMCFZ50, Cannon Powershot S5-IS, Sony Cybershot DSC-H9, Olympus Evolt E-500 and the Cannon Rebel-XTI. Any ideas on these or other models would be much appreciated. Thanks!

First of all for your needs, you are best served by an SLR. The reason being that it has the speed that you need for sports and for moving subjects. Image stabilization is also something good to have.

While the all in one super zooms like the FZ50 and the S5 and the H9 have their merits in having a single lens covering a wide range, you will find that you need more speed and responsiveness than they can provide.

Furthermore, seeing your intended use, you need a camera you can grow with. Only an SLR can give you that room.

Thus in your short list I would recommend the Canon Rebel XTi or the Evolt E-500. Both these cameras are very capable of fulfilling your needs.

BUT I would recommend you try look at the Olympus E510. For about $800 you get a much better camera than the E500 with built in lens stabilization.

The recommendations made by George below are excellent , particularly that VR lense. The Nikon D40 / VR telephotos should be in your short list of choices too :)

Good luck !

The first two answerer is correct. I have two DSLR and I couldn't imagine how I would shoot sports photography, or taking a picture of my pet with a pocket camera.

The only reason why I'm still looking at a pocket camera is only its size - I also want something that I'm able to carry just about anywhere. That way, I'd able to shoot picture all the time - but with the DSLR saved for some occassion.

From your interests, I think a DSLR is the only way to go. Non-DSLR cameras all suffer (in some degree) from the dreaded shutter-lag. That causes your camera to snap the photo a second or more AFTER you've pressed the shutter button. DSLR cameras take the picture virtually instantaneously.

As for landscapes and sports, you need the versatility of interchangeable lenses. Only a DSLR can help you reach that goal.

Consider a Nikon D40 as a kit runs less than $470 now. That includes a 18-55mm lens that is very good for landscapes with it's wide angle view.

A great sports optic is the 70-300mm VR, that goes for about $500.

Together, that goes for under $970 and is from a very dependable EBay vendor.
