Is there a word that describes a strong emotional attachment to someone that is less powerful than "love" but more than "like"? As in "I ____ you"

I was told by a man I liked that he had grown very fond of me & I thought that that was a very sweet thing to say, cos we'd only known each other a very short space of time but we both had quite strong feelings.

I like the word "dote", but is sounds strange to say I dote (upon) you.
