I'd say a mix of the two. Lift and run for 30 minutes apiece 4-5 days per week.
Running promotes weight loss by burning calories quicker than any other method. Cardio exercises trim you up and tone up your legs.
Weight lifting adds muscle to your body. The more muscle you have, the better your body is at burning calories. Using a high weight and low reps promotes muscle growth better than using a low weight and high reps (which promotes muscle tone).

it really depends on your purpose. Honestly,if you are looking to lose weight, both weight lifting and running, work. What really makes the difference is, if u lift weights, you can lose fat weight, but gain some muscle weight. To avoid this you can do high repetition, lower weight workouts, that are not as much for muscle building, but will help you lose weight. Running, will have similar results, so it really depends on what u enjoy most.

Lifting weights is better for the waistline and proportions. You will likely see faster results in losing pant sizes if you do high-intensity high-repetition exercises. Do chest, shoulders, biceps, triceps, legs. You will see the inches come off of the waist. And you won't bulk up. Just do a moderate amount of weight and as many reps as you can.
Running is good for losing that extra weight or that extra inch after it's hard to get more off.

Running (cardio) will burn fat, lifting weights will build muscle. The more muscle you have the more fat you will burn. So both are beneficial.
