We are not meant to know the date, hour or day, but I believe we are meant to know the season. I also believe we are meant to know the growing nearness of it.
There have been many dates banded about concerning the end and of course many have come and gone. I don't know what makes this date any different. That it might have been 'earmarked' by this and that religion would be reason enough to discount it in my opinion. Agreement on such things in my opinion serves only to give creedence and reinforcement to the popular belief that "all roads (do indeed) lead to Rome", they don't.
God's word says that the time of His coming will be upon us like a thief in the night. We are advised only to be watchful and ready and to recognise it's nearness. Those who are not ready (i.e. right with God, found in Christ) will be left behind.
Those who are left behind will then finally have the most convincing evidence that one can have as a "non-born again believer", but at a price, the enduring of a period of great tribulation, a time of great testing and suffering unlike any that may have gone before or ever will again.
Mat 24:31-33
And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
Mat 24:36
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. (KJV)
Mat 24:42-43
Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. (KJV)
1Th 4:16-17
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (KJV)

Another person questioned in YA this morning, that perhaps the JW's predict the end of the world in 2012.......but I do not know if this is reliable or not. There have always been predictions of this and that, ad infinitum......I think a reasoning person would get pretty sick and tired of it all. I wonder how long it would take to do some research into all the false prophecies and predictions that have come down the pike during the past few centuries? LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME........and trust God for the future.....only HE knows what will transpire. REST in HIM, my friend.

What other group of people (besides the Maya themselves and all the fluffy-minded New-Agers who like to promote fanciful yet utterly silly ideas based very loosely on the old Mayan calendar) say that anything significant is going to happen in 2012? I've not heard of any other religion or prophecy regarding this year.

Nothing of interest. The Mayan calendar resets in 2012; nobody else cares.

They said similar things about the year 2000. Remember Y2K ? In 2013 they will come up with a new year of doom. Its just fuel for the fear brokers.

It will follow 2011 and precede 2013. Isaac Newton said that the end of the world could not happen before 2060.
