The level of the sunburn (skin damage/level of burn) dictates whether or not the burn is bad enough the skin dies and peels off.

It is best that the skin does not peel.

It is now proven that each time you get a severe enough sun burn that you peel, your risk of future skin cancer increases.

I would highly recommend using sun screen in the future!

I know when you are younger you do not think of the skin problems sun burns causes 10-30 years later but it does eventually catch up with you.

GOOD LUCK!

No, if you're not peeling, you didn't burn that badly. You are one lucky dude if it's turning to tan. You just have more pigment in your skin than I do. I once stood in the shade, beside a swimming pool, sunscreened twice, and still ended up with a good sunburn. Oh, I forgot--I wore a hat and sunglasses.
