A place like a gallery, musical, concert, etc.

I know that Huntington Gallery is a famous one. What other places to go to?

i don't want a theme park. I go them like twice a year. I rarely go to concerts and galleries, so that's why I'm asking.

Lots of fun things to do in L.A.:

1. Take a day to walk Downtown L.A, you can get an "Angel's Walk" map at the Wells Fargo building. They have a free museum on their bottom floor. It's neat. The walk and guided map offers historical insights on many of the buildings downtown, including the L.A. public library, the old city hall, and a weird building that is in a lot of weird movies.

2. Go to a taping of a television show. Many studios have free tickets for studio audiences, especially for low-rated shows or ones getting filmed for mid-season replacements.

is a good place to start for ideas for studio tapings.

3. Have you been to the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena? It's excellent. So is the Getty Museum off the 405 freeway. It's tough to find a day when it isn't crowded, so you have to make reservations. But worth at least once in a while.

4. Tiny Cabrillo Marine Museum in San Pedro packs a bigger punch if you go to the tide pools when the tide is out and the school kids are in the museum. The kids leave after lucnh when the tide comes in and the place is open until 4PM. It has a lot more in-depth info than the one in Long Beach and is a lot more personal. You can get much closer to the sharks in the touchy-feely tide pool tank in the back.

5. Check out Mission San Fernando, Mission San Gabriel, and Mission San Juan Capistrano for some very neat bits of California History.

6. The top of Mt. Wilson off Hwy 2 out of Glendale offers great views of the city, a heck of a drive, and a surprise observatory at the top of the mountain.

7. If you have a full day with nothing to do, take a drive up to Vasquez Rocks off Hwy 14 and Pearblossom Hwy on the way to Palmdale/Lancaster/Mojave. It's worth it to find those actual weird rocks used in tv shows like "Star Trek".

8. The dance clubs in Orange County, especially on Latin nights, are full of actors and actresses who are way famous on Mexican and South American telenovelas and total unknowns in L.A. (My sister-in-law is from Panama, and she loves seeing all her favorite telenovela stars in the clubs in Orange County!)

9. Go to at least one college football game at the Coliseum and the Rose Bowl - even if you don't like the teams the historic stadiums have wonderful parks right next to them. Expostion Park off Exposition Blvd. has the Natural History Museum, the Science Discovery Museum, and the USC College campus has their own art gallery and historic buildings. Down the street from USC Campus is the historic Adams district, with 5 historic church buildings, the historic AAA Headquarters building, and be on the lookout or ask around for a place called "Chanos" which has the best pastrami quesadilla especial I have ever eaten. The students will be happy to direct you to both "Chanos" and "Tommy's" which has the best chili burgers in the worst neighborhood in town.

And ask around for places to go after that. There's plenty to look at just on one block of Downtown.
