I've got a 65 Mustang with a 302, and my dipstick is on the righthand side, next to the valve cover. It has a metal bar that is forged into a loop that you can just hook a finger around and pull. It's very easy

Check the tube to see if it has a tab with a bolt through it and if it does, remove the bolt. Find a small bolt long enough with about one inch with no threads. Insert the bolt into the tube and grasp with Visegrips and twist back and forth until it comes out. Pull out the old dipstick if it doesn't come out with the tube, reinsert the tube with the tab(if it has one) aligned with the bolt hole and use the small bolt previously inserted to drive the tube back in.

Needle nose pliers might work for pulling the broken piece, if the tube needs replacing pull it hard with lock pliers, vice grips would be better
