When the mosquito stabs her needle-like mouthparts through the skin of her victim, she injects her saliva -- teeming with digestive enzymes and anticoagulants. The first time a person is bitten, there is no reaction. With subsequent bites, the person becomes sensitized to the foreign proteins, and small, itchy, red bumps appear about 24 hours later. This is the most common reaction in young children. After many more bites, a pale, swollen hive, or wheal, begins to appear within minutes after a bite -- followed by the red bump 24 hours later. This is the most common reaction in older children and adolescents.
With repeated mosquito bites, some people begin to become insensitive again, much as if they had allergy shots. Some older children and adults get no reaction to mosquito bites (unless they go for a long time without being bitten -- then the process can start again). Other people become increasingly allergic with repeated stings. They can develop blistering, bruised, large inflammatory reactions. For these people, avoiding being bitten is a particularly good idea.

It's the body reacting to the venom left by the bite. The body releases histamines, to fight off the foreign substance, which is what causes the itching and swelling. For some it doesn't last longer than a day at most, for people like me, it usually last a number of days.

If you live in a humid area (I am in Ohio, and its muggy), then these may be the bites of "Canadian Soldier" ants, they look like ants with wings and usually pop up around mid may through early fall. Ive been bitten a lot last year and the look like mosquito bites but hurt and itch more. To see if your area has these, contact a local exterminator, or many times you can see these upside down on your car roof when it has condensation in the morning. To rid your house of these, I suggest Ortho Home Defense Max, it is kid and pet safe and really effective.

I agree with Mary D it is because of the poison and your body is allergic to it. Get some cortizone that is the best medicine for itchiness unless there is something else out there but all I know is cortizone 10 it is the best!

Its not the bite that's itchy. Its the release of histamines from the body that makes it itch....

Because when she lands on you, she drops a bit of acid-like substance on your skin so she can get her proboscis into your skin. It acts like a softening agent as well as a blood thinner so she can keep this spot open.
And then she drinks your blood.
Its the substance that makes you itch,
Lovely little vampires, aren't they?

they produce a small amount of their saliva with an anti quagilant. your body's reaction is to make it ithch, so you will scratch. this action causes you to scratch away the bad stuff and also rush healthy blood to the injured area.
