Ive been researching toy storage bins online and they're really expensive. My daughter is not quite ready for a toybox yet. Do you think it would work if I just bought some tupperware bins and put them on the shelves of a bookcase? Or do you have another option for toy storage that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

That is exactly what I do with my son's things. Those big clear plastic bins on shelves. It is actually really nice...you put everything of a set in one...all the train parts in one, all the dinosaurs in another, Mr. Potato Head has his own...then your child will not be so overwhelmed trying to find specific toys, or trying to put them away...he has to put everything back in the container and put it back on the shelf before he can get another out. One thing to remember though is make sure the shelf is anchored to the wall so she can't pull it over on herself.

You could build one out of 2x4s and a nice veneer plywood(oak, ash, walnut, etc.); and paint it up nice. I am going to do that soon. As far as organizing and making a child put it back before she gets another one out, that's just cruel and ridiculous. All that will teach a child is that there is no time for play if everything has be clean first, and then they will never learn to just have fun. But teaching a child to pick it all up after they are done for the day is a good thing. I need to do that with my son.

Wal-Mart has all sorts of storage bins, stackable crates, etc. that are great to use as toy bins/boxes and compared to tupperware prices that just adds to the plus side of them. good luck

Of course!! We have used the clear Rubbermaid bins for toys. That way they can see whats inside and still have their toys organized.

we did this with my sons toys too. We bought boxes that he could not open (hahaha) so he had to ask for the toys, and then clean up one box before he could have the next. Kept the room from getting messy that much quicker.

I got several large canvas bins. She has access to all of her toys, wich can get really messy, but it also makes for easy pick up too.

I got some of those stack-able shelves at walmart and I got some of those waffle containers for my son's room. They are cheap and he could use them in the dorm someday
