First of all, it was very irrespnsible to breed a dog that old. That is waaaaay too old.
Secondly, when a pregnant b itch acts ill, you get her to the vet! FAST! There are too many things that could be going wrong to be wasting time here. You should never have bred her if you were not prepared to provide medical care at the slightest hint of a problem.
You asked if this could be life threatening - YES IT CAN BE!! Pregnancy is dangerous, especially in a Chihuahua and espacially in one too old to be pregnant.
Get her to the vet ASAP. You bred her, you are responsible to make sure it goes smoothly.

It sounds like the problem began with the flea shampoo, followed by the regular shampoo. Depending on what type you used, it could be an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the shampoo, especially the flea ones. They are very toxic to animals and humans. I do not think it had to do with her heat cycle, although a dog will be out of sorts until that passes, but not the symptoms you are describing. If she is eating and drinking fine, thats a good sign. Try to get some "Natural" dog shampoo at a Health Food Store, not a pet store. They have oatmeal shampoos that are all natural and will not harm your dog, and they do have flea shampoos also. Do not let her sit too long in the sun, especially if it is very hot outside, a dog could get heat stroke. Keep the dog cool if she is hot, especially after a heat, the tissues are swollen and I would giver her some extra affection. Its a rough time for a dog. Actually at 7 years old, why have you not had her spayed? She is getting older, and a female dog can develop serious complications like Parvo Virus, if they are not spayed so that would be a good idea. Good luck.

Well you bred her, and then used flea shampoo on her.. And she's been acting strange.. Pretending to be sick, hiding, walking like she is in pain... Body is tight and she sleeps sitting up... Hmmm... And you didn't think that you should take her to the vet???
I haven't had this problem.. I would never breed a dog and then give them a bath with flea shampoo.. Why wouldn't you take her to the vet?? You are risking the lives of the unborn puppies.. Why don't you just spay her instead of playing games???
SHE IS TOO OLD TO WHELP A LITTER...

The only good part of this is that she is eating and drinking normally; however, you really need to take her to the emergency vet in your area because she does sound like she is in pain constantly and the shaking isn't normal at all.
ALSO: when a dog is pregnant or attempting to get pregnant you really shouldn't use a flea shampoo- you need to use an all natural shampoo because the chemicals are not good.
And 7 years old is TOO OLD to be breeding a dog- it is dangerous the older the dog gets. Most breeding dogs are retired by that age.

I think you should definately take her to the vets, probably an emergency one, if most are closed right now. A friend of had a male dog with those symptoms and it turned out that he had a prostate problem and had to get neutered. Maybe it could be a similar problem effecting part of her reproductive tract? If she's faking, then it's money down the drain, but would you want to take the risk if she's not faking? Your vet will probably be able to suggest action if it turns out just to be a behavioural problem, but if there is more wrong with her, you'll feel much better for knowing that she's being taken care of by professionals.

Um, yes, breeding her is life-threatening! At 7 yrs, she should be spayed. Any reputable breeder retires females by this age from their breeding program She could lose the litter, suffer complications during birth, even die. She will likely need a c-section. Many Chi's do, because of their size, but especially with this girl's age, she shouldn't be having a litter in the first place.
Go to the vet, discuss your options, and either have her spayed, or be prepared to fork over a couple thousand for an emergency c-section.

I have a 7 yr old and a 3 1/2 yr old. During the week I put them to bed between 8:00pm and 8:30pm, so they can wake for school. On the weekend between 9pm and 10:00pm, depending on what they did that day, how tired they are and if they behaved. My 3 yr old is usually passed out by 9pm on the weekends. If my older one has behaved I let her stay up as a treat, if not she goes at her regular bedtime. On special occasions when we go out, then there is no specific bedtime, but thats only a few times a year.

I would most definitely get her to the vet ASAP. She shouldn't be acting like that. You should have never bread her at 7 years old to start with. That is way too old for a dog to be having babies. You never bath a pregnate or nursing dog with flea shampoo.

First of all, she's too old to be having puppies, especially for the first time. You need to have her looked at by a vet.It sounds to me as if she may have injured her back ( spinal disks.) It's still early enough to have her spayed before she gets too far along. Please consider your dog's life,it may be at stake because you failed to have her spayed and chose, unwisely,to breed a middle aged dog.If her back is injured,it will be hard for her to go through the pregnancy and she will probably require a C- section as her back muscles won't be strong enough for her to push the puppies out naturally. You'd better call a vet first thing Monday morning,or even go to an emergency vet ,as back injuries can lead to paralysis in the rear legs.

You should take her to the vet, since she might be pregnant. He would be able to tell you what's wrong with her and whether it has to do with a pregnancy. As an aside, I don't think bathing a pregnant dog with flea shampoo is a good idea; it's toxic stuff and you don't want to take any chances with her. She may be having difficulty with her pregnancy. Do whatever the vet says.....
