you about some episode in their life and what happened. They usually say it after every 2nd or 3rd sentence. After about the fifth time, I'm ready to scream.

That is one of the worst things that I have trouble dealing with too. Whyyyyyyyyy would they say that over and over and over......it is so distracting. By the time I hear that a few times, I cannot even concentrate on the dribble they are trying to talk to me about because I am too busy evaluating if they were dropped on their head as a baby.
Another one is the ........he goes...then she goes.......then I go...........then he goes .........then she goes..........
Where the heck is everyone going...and why do I care?!!!
Grrrrrrrrrr....very annoying.

Honey, I know EXACTLY what you mean! I have a next door neighbor that, every time we get together and chat, be it in the yard, go somewhere, whatever, she undoubtedly will come out with some mundane story about her family's legal crap and then the next thing to come out of her mouth is: "Does that sound right to you?!" I get so ddddddd tired of hearing that over and over again. It really makes you want to ring their little chicken neck but you just have to smile and say: "well, does it sound right to you?" Every other sentence practically!
Sorry, but that and a couple of other things she's pulled over the years has made me discontent with her as a "social" contact.
We don't do anything anymore, especially after she opposed me on a dog issue around here and didn't support a neighbor on her petition with the county!

Yes.It can be so annoying that once I actually stopped someones one sided conversation to say "you dont have to say "you know what I mean" every 2 sentences.

Usually, they are not aware of this "tick" and it is funny to watch how they develop this self rewind once you tell them about the constant nag.

It actually makes them lose concentration on the exciting tale they are relating to you.

However, the bad news was that my friend stopped saying "you know what I mean" for only 5 minutes. Then it was back.

Yeah...."I know what your saying.." LOL!!! Couldn't pass it up!!! I have a friend that uses that phrase a lot and she also says "ya know" and "Umm" a lot too. Whenever we're talking on the phone...she will sigh really loud and then say "anyways..." even if the next sentence to follow is good byes. Strange.

I knew a man who did this every time you talked with him. He'd say more like "Do you understand what I'm saying?"....I felt like he thought I was a dummy..or had a language barrier ...but I think what was really happening was that he didn't know if HE was communicating effectively. I'm GUILTY...of "ya' know". We got in the habit of saying it in high school. We tried not saying it but we sounded like we were stuttering. (trying to NOT say it) I think I don't say it now..no one has complained..guess I forgot about it.,ya' know.

So am I. There's a teacher who constantly says, "Ya know." Then there's another that drives me crazy by having to say, "Okay?" to confirm if you're listening or not.

Oh, yes, that is VERY annoying! I don't know if the person is even conscious of it, but it's very aggravating and distracting.

Say, "of course I know what you're saying. We speak the same language, you're talking, I'm hearing, STOP SAYING THAT!"

Ugh! It is annoying but unfortunately it just becomes habit. Just hope that you don't pick it up.
