Is California a good state to start? If yes, why? If no, why? Where would you advise me to start if California is not the one?

California is not a good place for a 23 year old to start mainly because the cost of everything is so expensive. Unless you want a roommate.. I was your age when I broke away from my parents, couldnt take the rules anymore. You should find a state that your parents arent in, that should work..

California is EXPENSIVE... like 4X as costly as anywhere else. Same for the east coast.

Just look around your current area and see what is available in a nice-enough area that is affordable for you... try to find several choices. Then interview and find a good job somewhere near-enough to where you would like to live.
The ideal spot could be in the next town, or on the other side of your current town. If a regular apartment is too expensive, try looking for a little garage apartment.

You can stay scarce in your known area just as well as going to another state.

I am 27, in California, and possibly planning to move out of state. Most of the time, it's known for great weather. But generally the major cities in California have higher cost of living than the rest of the nation. I would recommend for you to look at the cost of living index for the locations you're considering. If you are involved in a particular job field, you will probably want to consider the possibilities for that field in CA. It all depends on your goals. I might be moving out of CA due to cost (although I make a very decent wage) and personal relationship reasons.

You could check out the cost of living calculator link below to get started on city comparisons.

Also Wikipedia has basics for individual cities/towns, if you want to search there. Good for looking up population, main employers, etc.

Since you're still young (and presumably not tied down with family), you could move to another state and still move back or somewhere else, if things don't work out. Good luck!

Good for you! You are so fortunate to realize the controlling effect parents can have in your life. I'm not as lucky as you. I am 54 and I have crapped on all my life by them. I am at the point of disowning them. Good luck to you! Have a blessed life!

unless you have some maketable skills Cali might eat you alive. Also if you are from podunk iowa and have never been to a large city you might want to start small, like Florida

your parents are the only ones you will ever have in your life. never another real mama or never another real daddy. so go ahead and leave, but always remember your parents are where you came from.
