Most cops are jackasses. People become cops so that they can flex muscle and pick on the people they couldn't otherwise get away with picking on. I encourage people to be as polite as possible to the cops. Carry a small tape recorder. Let them vent and act like asses, and pray like everything they say inappropriate things to you.

I actually got a cop fired by doing this. He denied even hassling me, but my tape recorder proved him wrong. :-)

Respect Law Enforcement! But if you need to hash this out, here is the rest of my answer: My first question would be.. where were you? Were you in an area that was loud? Whether you were or were not is irrelevant; however if there is a possibility it still would not matter... the cop may have been screwing with ya. If you were looking him directly in the face and speaking an audible tone.. then he was probably screwing with ya.. BUT if you were under breathing your tone or talking in another direction.. it is truly possible that he could not hear you.

Respect of Law Enforcement is an expectation; however it is not necessarily a law breaker; however if you disrespected them by throwing a bottle, well then it is a different matter. If you spit at them.. again it is another matter.

I do not advocate Law Enforcement screwing with people; however I also do not believe at any time should a citizen insult law enforcement. He had already asked you twice. and while his conduct was not exceptional.. it could have been that he perceived you were being 'deaf' on purpose.

You could reply to him in the manner you've written; however I would advise against it. Police have the ability to take away your freedom.... detain you etc. therefore you do not want to 'poke the bear' - NO, they DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO JUST TREAT YOU POORLY; however without being there.. I cannot know exactly what was going on.

Yes, some cops are real jerks.. and some citizens are real jerks too AND then there are good cops & good citizens.. too.. if you mix one with another.. well, that can sometimes be a little tense.

The best advice I have is: Do whatever, comply and observe. Observe the time, location, unrelated witnesses, what was said, the officer's name, badge number, squad number etc... After the incident is OVER and the Officer has left.. contact the proper unit in the department and provide as much information as possible about the incident. You will more than likely have to provide a written statement; however if you feel that your rights have been violated then stick up for yourself. If you get in a toe-to-toe with the officer right there in the street.. then any report you make after the fact will NOT be as credible EVEN IF IT'S ALL TRUE.

Rodney King was told numerous times to stay down and IF the general public had the privilege of seeing the entire tape, rather than a snippet.. they would've seen the officers give him several chances to comply. Irrespective of where you sit on this.. it is what it is, a person can only advise another so many times. The General Public did not have access to the whole tape for many years and now.. it does not matter because the reactions after the acquittal removed all credibility.

While you may not like the way he spoke to you, get over it.. if your rights are ever actually violated and you feel the need to so something... then do it in a credible and believable manner. More people will listen to you... and more people will be more inclined to believe you.

I wish you well!

You have the right to walk away without answering. The officer also has the right to arrest and detain you.

The thing about being loud and abusive with an officer is the officer has the power to arrest you for disturbing the peace.

I don't disagree with you for wanting to resist authority. I resist every authority there is.

The trick is learning when, where, and how to resist.

Maybe you will eventually get a job where you have some power and can return a little of what you got.

You might get a job approving loans and you could turn down every police officer application.

Or you could become a police officer yourself and show people how it should be done.

It's not the respect in your voice, it's the respect in your answer. I'm sorry if the cop made you cry but if you don't want to get yelled at don't be a smart-***. I've been more places and I've seen more things than you. I don't have the patience to put up with another drunk douchebag who thinks he's the first person to ever smart off to me.

You wanna know a secret. Everytime you pick a fight like that with a cop, the cop wins. I have all the time in the world and I am getting paid either way. So let's cut to the chase and get to the answers that I WILL eventually get out of you.

Well let's see...I would say that you getting smart wouldn't be wise, because obviously, if a cop wanted to take you in on something he easily could...You could always fight the charges, but it wouldn't be his time you would be wasting, it would be inconveniencing you...he'd be getting overtime for the pay to show up in court...So if you got smart after he did, he could find a reason to charge you with someone even if it was just a ticket, but even if you got out of the charges later, he would still come out with extra money.

Cops don't like being disrespected, but I find it amazing that some still feel they will be respected after unnecessarily pissing someone off.

I love when I pull over a car. Someone doesn't have a driver's license.

Me: Okay, what is your name?
Driver: mumbling
Me: Sorry sir, I have the highway next to me, you really are going to have to speak up.
Driver: more mumbling
Me: Please speak up, I can't hear you over traffic.
Driver: still mumbling.

Yeah, I get upset with things like that too.

BTW, "Here" is not an answer to "where are you from.". An answer would be 123 Main Street. Or if out of town, Chicago, Kansas City, Berlin, Moscow, ect.

I think if you respond in such a manner it would be asking for trouble. You should just say, "I'm from (your address)," much louder than you did. Talking back to a cop is never a good idea.

Answer the man's question or be polite and tell him that you do not want to tell him. Just as you would expect in someone talking to you.... don't be an #$*hole about it.

Some police like to provoke innocent people so they look good by bagging you or for getting their jollies.

Some however grew up with insecure childhoods and saying anything they perceive as smart is an invitation for an azz whooping or at least whatever citations they can pull out of their hat, and they will do that.

Saying here can be perceived as talking smart and disrespectful.

So it could have been both ways. The cop could been the jerk, or it could have been the cop thinking you were the jerk and treating you accordingly.
Why the thumbs down. Just giving it like it is.
