Dumping a cat on a country road leaves it susceptible to starvation, being run over, or being attacked by dogs. It also puts a strain on the farmers who live there, as obviously they cannot care for all of the dumped animals.
However, when dumping an animal, it may have a chance to survive as opposed to putting it down, where there is no chance.
Which choice is the better when the cat cannot be kept?
To add, what if the cat is defective, as in reduced intelligence/retardation?
Note: The cat cannot be passed to another owner.
What do you think?

I think you should be dumped on a country road due to your defectiveness.

dumping is illegal (its criminal animal abandonment)... most do not survive.. I live in the country - farmers will shoot 'strays' or their farm dogs or cats or coyotess will kill them.. or they are hit on the road or starve.. or run and run..
the "chance" of survival is about 5 %.. and its a cruel life if they are lucky even then...
euthanasia is a for sure death but at least its relatively painless...
I would suggest surrendering the cat to an SPCA or shelter - there is always a chance..
if this cat cannot be given to a new owner because of something wrong with it.. the only humane thing is to put it down... too many strays already...

If the cat cannot be given away to another owner then I would take it to the shelter. There it would be cared for until it was adopted and if it were not adopted it would be put down. That way the cat never has to starve and it will be taken care of until it's last day. I would never ever dump an animal somewhere. There is no telling what would happen to it. Especially if it has some sort of handicap. One of my cats is mentally retarded. I couldn't imagine being cruel enough to dump her somewhere.

So I talk to the advocates of feral colonies and they tell me that disease is a form of population control. Dumping would be a great way to keep those disease alive, don't you think...?
I too, like sassyfrassksmom work at a shelter. I have had cats up for adoption for many, many months and several are special needs (we are all hoping for that sympathy adoption).
Dumping is a hell of a lot more inhumane than finding a shelter or rescue group.
BTW my cat was born with 3 legs and was NOT euthanized by the shelter!

I live on a farm- if you don't want your cat, I certainly don't want it. I already have 2 dogs and 3 cats that have been dumped; I can't tell you how many we've had to take to the shelter.
Cats are domesticated. They can't survive in the wild, not easily or for long.
Take the cat to a shelter. You could even look for a no-kill shelter, that will care for the cat, or foster it out, until it is adopted.

Well i think that maybe you should at least put her in the shelter! You can't just kill something because you don't want it! Or dump it! How would you feel if someone who you thought loved you, decided you were retarded and they just abandoned you in the middle of nowhere with nothing to eat or to cuddle up to?! Thats a very irresponsible thing to do as a pet owner! When you kept this cat, didn't you promise it somewhere warm to sleep with food and water? People like you should be ashamed. If you can't handle a cat with retardation, why did you decide to take it in? For you its "Out of sight out of mind". Find someone who will PROMISE to take care of her, so she doesn't have to be placed in all these homes and where she could feel accepted how she is.

ever hear of the animal shelter? the SPCA? and others? if the cat is in a state of retardation then it cannot fend for itself.. it is best to put it down.. if it is a normal healthy cat then either pay the money to the animal shelter or spca or put it to sleep.. but do not dump it.. that is just flat wrong.. don't put it at risk... You must remember that animals do not have the ability to think and reason.. they live by instinct.. you are superior to it because you can think and reason.. so why not use your reasoning and do the best thing for the animal? quit thinking of youself and think of the cat. Do the right thing..

First, I do not agree with Euthanasia.
I would recommend you bring the cat in question to a local animal shelter and give it to them. He will have a better chance of finding a good home and surviving.

Next time you take a cat off the road that has it's back end crushed flat yet is still alive, think about what you just asked. It's a no brainer.
Euthenising is the kinder way to go.
