I suggest that you take a look at the book of Hebrews Chapter 11. It list great men and women who impacted family, friends and countries. Social problems exist because society has desired to live outside of the laws and principles of the Kingdom of God. The challenges to these men and women and how they responded serve as an example for Christians today. I hope that this answer leads you in the right direction.

Religion has solved no problems, as you may have figured out. People have tried to solve problems under the rubric of religion, but they could have done this and kept their beliefs out of it. Whatever happened to trying to help others out of the goodness of your heart and not because some imaginary guy in the sky was saying you should do this.
On the other hand, religion--or, more accurately, disagreements over religion--has caused more misery, sorrow, death, and destruction than anything I can think of.

Indeed. Actually religion has often been the best friend of other social tyranny: like in pre-revolutionary France or Tsarist Russia.
In France the Clergy was in bed with the nobility and made lots of lovely money from it . . .
In Russia, the Tsar was head of the church . . .
And today: religion exacerbates the AIDS crisis by discouraging condom use as it's "evil".
But appaently, passing out soup to homeless people makes religion legitimate in fighting social problems.

Christianity never promised to solve social problems, but to solve the UNIVERSAL Problem of a sin cursed world with NO HOPE. The Cross deals with the problem that is common ot ALL mankind. Separation from God.
God solved the problem by entering HISTORY Himself and dying to pay the penalty for OUR sins. He has reconciled the world unto Himself and is NOT counting their sins against them.
This is GOOD NEWS, and when we TRUST in what He has said He has DONE, we are taken OUT of the kingdom of darkness and placed INTO the Kingdom of His Dear SON....actually placed INTO a BODY...a living entity called the church the Body of Christ. We get a NEW identity and a new destination: HEAVEN.

The King James Bible shows many, and lots of how to but we as humans have a very strong weakness and seem to always give in to temptation and wrong doing! Religion is a way of breaking people apart but true righteousness is a true way to true peace and truth! You ought to give it a try and find out for yourself. Try not talking about others and not stealing and not being influenced by the outside world by any kind of media and no sex outside of marriage or even thinking of it unless its of your wife or husband and praying to GOD for advise and guidance and showing that you really believe in everything he says and understanding when your being influenced by the devil to do wrong of any kind. Oh and by the way there really are fallen angels that are with the devil that do his bidding to get you to do the wrong things and get to live inside of you to get you to think of wrong all the time unless you rebuke them in the name of Jesus the Christ. But beware of the power of good and evil because if your weak you will become a victim and not a conqueror. Well its your turn!
