AVI stands for audio/video interlaced and really doesn't tell you anything about what kind of file it REALLY is. Another poster suggested that it may be a DivX file which is probably right but it could be ANY format. There are a few utilities out there that will tell you what codec (coder/decoder) you need to play that AVI file.

Most codecs are packaged just like programs. You download an executable (get it from a trusted source) and run it. It will install but nothing may show up in your "Program Files" list but you will find that magically, Windows Media Player can now play your movie.

Also check out Xvid as well.

AVI Files are played by Windows MEdia Player
You might have to go get a CodeC for the movie which can be found at http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AC3_Filter.htm

Almost all do.

Windows Media Player
VLC
Media Player Classic

etc... The problem you are likely having is that you are playing a "DivX" file and you do not have the proper codecs installed. Try installing the "XP Codec Pack":
