Too many people are judging Islam by it's followers that attract the wrong attention. The followers that make up only a small fraction of the total population of Muslims.

Then you have people misinterpreting Islam. I would like to point out that verse 4:34 doesn't mean that Muslim men can beat their wives.

Let's look at verse 4:34:

YUSUFALI: Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).

http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/004.qmt.html

At first glance, then it may seem that in Islam then men are higher than women and that they are allowed to beat them.
However, I will now delve into this verse and we shall see if this theory will be supported.

First, let's think about the status of men and women in Islam. Contrary to popular belief, both men and women are considered to be equal:

Quran 3:195 tells us :

"Their Lord responded to them: "I never fail to reward any worker among you for any work you do, be you MALE OR FEMALE, YOU ARE EQUAL TO ONE ANOTHER........."

Thus, one must read the first sentence carefully. Yes, men and women are equal, but God has given men strength so they can protect and provide for their wives and family. In return, women are supposed to be faithful to their men and not disobedient. Yet, although this is not addressed in this verse, men are supposed to be faithful and obedient to their wives as well.

When a woman is a good wife then the husband is required to do nothing, but to make her happy in return.
I must stress that Muslim men should only turn to verse 4:34 when their wife is misbehaving such as constantly yelling, cheating and refusing to help their husbands run the family ship.

Then Muslim men can turn to verse 4:34 and they are faced with options:

1. Admonish them (first). Muslim men are supposed to talk to their spouses and explain to them that their behavior is wrong. Hopefully, the woman will realize that she should stop whatever she is doing. If she changes her behavior then verse 4:34 is no longer needed.

Read this sentence carefully:

but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance).

However.....

2. If the woman continues then Muslim men can consult the second step, which is to ignore them in bed. By putting their backs to their wives in bed and refusing to give them affection then this will clearly show to the wife that her behavior needs to change. If she does change her behavior then verse 4:34 is no longer need. But...

3. Now we have come to the most controversial part of verse 4:34.

Beat them (lightly).

What exactly does this mean? How can you beat a person lightly?

I would like to remind everyone who is reading this that you are reading English that was translated from Arabic.

I would like to quote from this site:

1 Does the Arabic word 'daraba' necessarily mean "violent or intense or repeated striking?

No, jurists routinely use the expression "daraba al-ma' `ala wajhihi" - lit. strike water upon the face, for someone accomplishing the first rukn of wudu' (washing the face).
Also in Arabic daraba al-ard "to strike the earth" - as in verse 4:94 {When you strike the earth in the cause of Allah} - means to travel, i.e. walking with a staff.

The Prophet (pbuh) also expressed astonishment at the cruelty of certain men when he said: "Could any of you beat his wife as he would beat a slave, and then lie with her in the evening ?" (Bukhari and Muslim).

Many Muslim men read the "beat them lightly" as just merely tapping their wives symbolically. However, other Muslim men actually feel as if they are allowed to beat their wives thanks to this verse.

Yet, in Islam, it is not allowed to beat their wives. Clearly, the Muslim men who do are not behaving like true Muslims. One must remember that wife beaters exist all over the world and can claim all religions or nationalities.

One must also ask this question:

Can you really judge a religion by it's followers?

We don't attack islam. We expose islam. There is a difference. If you think quoting the Quranic verses about fighting unbelievers and quoting Quranic verses about murder and killing is an attack on islam, then why don't muslims condemn the various islamic fundamentalist all over the world committing acts of violence against other muslims and non-muslims alike using the Quran and the islamic hadiths to justify their actions?

Do Buddhists believe in a creator god?

No, we do not. There are several logical reasons for this. The Buddha, like modern scientists, sociologists and psychologists, believed that religious ideas and especially the god idea have their origins in fear. The Buddha says:

"Gripped by fear men go to sacred mountains, sacred groves, sacred trees and shrines." *Dhammpada 188

Primitive man found himself in a dangerous and hostile world, the fear of wild animals, of not being able to find enough food, of injury or disease, and of natural phenomena like thunder, lightning and volcanoes was constantly with him. Finding no security, he created the idea of god in order to give him comfort in good times, courage in times of danger and consolation when things went wrong. To this day, you will notice that people become more religious at times of crises, you will hear them say that the belief in a god gives them the strength they need to deal with life. You will hear them explain that they believe in god because they prayed in time of need and their prayer was answered. All this seems to support the Buddha’s teaching that the god-idea is a response to fear and frustration. The Buddha taught us to try to understand our fears, to lessen our desires and to calmly and courageously accept the things we cannot change. He replaced fear, not with irrational belief but with rational understanding.

The second reason the Buddha did not believe in a creator god is because there does not seem to be any evidence to support this idea. There are numerous religions, all claiming that they alone have god’s words preserved in their holy book, that they alone understand god’s nature, that their god exists and that the gods of other religions do not. Some claim that god is masculine, some that she is feminine and others that it is neuter. They are all satisfied that there is ample evidence to prove the existence of their god but they laugh in disbelief at the evidence other religions use to prove the existence of another god. It is not surprising that with so many different religions spending so many centuries trying to prove the existence of their gods that still no real, concrete, substantial or irrefutable evidence has been found. Buddhists suspend judgement until such evidence is forthcoming.

The third reason the Buddha did not believe in a creator god is that the belief is not necessary. Some claim that the belief in a god is necessary in order to explain the origin of the universe. But this is not so. Science has very convincingly explained how the universe came into being without having to introduce the god-idea. Some claim that belief in god is necessary to have a happy, meaningful life. Again we can see that this is not so. There are millions of Atheists, free-thinkers and Buddhists, who live useful, happy and meaningful lives without belief in a creator god. Some claim that belief in god’s power is necessary because humans, being weak, do not have the strength to help themselves. Once again, the evidence indicates the opposite. One often hears of people who have overcome great disabilities and handicaps, enormous odds and difficulties through their own inner resources, through their own efforts and without belief in a god. Some claim that god is necessary in order to give man salvation. But this argument only holds good if you accept the theological concept of salvation and Buddhists do not accept such a concept. Based on his own experience, the Buddha saw that each human being had the capacity to purify the mind, develop infinite love and compassion and perfect understanding. He shifted attention from the heavens to the heart and encouraged us to find solutions to our problems through self-understanding.

But if there is no creator god how did the universe get here?

All religions have myths and stories which attempt to answer this question. In ancient times, when man simply did not know, such myths were adequate, but in the 20th century, in the age of physics, astronomy and geology, such myths have been superseded by scientific fact. Science has explained the origin of the universe without recourse to the god-idea.

Listen , I do not like Islam , or any other religion for that matter, because it is very misogynistic.
The quran sanctions wife beating, why should I agree with that?
Quran (4:34) orders a man to beat his wife if she doesn't obey him!
Quran 4:34: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in their sleeping places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.
