Your eardrum is numbed with medicine and a gadget inserts the tube into your eardrum, making a small hole for it. The tube narrows towards the end inside the ear, so as the drum heals, it forces the tube out. The tube is small, but big enough to let air in and out to dry the middle ear. I have had tubes put in since high school (Class of 1960).
It does not involve hospitals or surgery, unless there is some other problem. It is usually done in the ear doctor's office.

You would start by seeing an ENT. If he feels that you need tubes he will schedule you for outpatient surgery to do them. They give you some gas to put you to sleep and the process is very quick. After he has put the tubes in you'll go to recovery until you wake up and then you'll start getting ready to go home (must be able to pee first).

my daughter had this done twice.. it involves out patient surgery. They put you to sleep then insert a small plastic type tube into the ear canal . this holds the canal open allowing any fluids to drain out like it's supposed to. I think it took 2 days and she was up and back to normal /no pain

I think she means for the infants to get tubes in the ears to drain the earwax to the nose. You should ask your doctor. I was supposed to get them but my dad said no, to this day 17 years later i still get ear infections. I recommend you get them for your child so she wouldn't experience painful outer canal ear infections frequently.
