Not from imagination. His model was a real person, She is generally thought to be a young woman from Florence, Monna (or Mona) Lisa, who in 1495 married a well-known nobleman Francesco del Giocondo, and so the picture is sometimes called: `La Gioconda''. (1)
Not long ago, some art historians proposed a new theory about who Leonardo's model was. They believe that the Mona Lisa. was in fact based on a self-portrait of Da Vinci himseslf.. Using a computer they compared the woman's face with a self-portrait of the artist and found that eyes, hair, cheeks, nose, and famous smile were all very similar. (2)

Nobody knows.
All claims of who she may have been are just that. There is no proof the painting actually IS of one or the other person. Leonardo was not the one that gave the painting it's name, neither Mona Lisa or la Giaconda.
It is not likely he did the painting without a model... but who she was will always be shrouded in the mists of turpentine.

It really doesn't matter, now does it? Of course she was real. Da Vinci' was almost blind when he painted the the portrait. READ the book!
