-- It's old
-- It's very heavily used
-- It runs 24 hours. Most other cities' systems are shut down for cleaning in the wee hours
-- There's water pouring into the system at all times, thus rust and related nastiness

Been there ...many times...
Years of neglect and too many people using the subways daily compared to a much smaller city like Atlanta.
NYC needs to clean up it's act somehow with the subway...BUT..I think they've got BIGGER priorities, after 9-11
Like rebuilding the WTC, for starters.
Would be nice if NYC Subway could resemble the MARTA subways in Atlanta, but I wouldn't bet on it.....Too much $$ to overhaul such a large and extensive subway line.
NYC Transit Police doesn't have the manpower (or the interest) to stop people from eating or littering in the subway, much less catch people who "jump the turnstile"
Case in Point: I used to jump it ALL the time when I was in college and never got caught (I was a poor college student..lol)...I tried the SAME thing in Atlanta on the MARTA, and a transit cop gave me a 15 min. lecture on why this was wrong...He was cool about it though, but they REALLY have nothing else better to do, Unlike NYC Transit Cops....

Well, it is over 100 years old, and it's gotten a lot of use in that century. It runs 24/7, so there's no downtime for cleaning, as someone mentioned. Plus, people are allowed to eat in the stations and trains.
And yes, you can get ticketed if you are eating on a Metro (Washington, DC) train or in the station, but the transit police have to catch you first.

It's probably because of so many people taking the subway everyday. It's bound to happen. More people=more waste. Philly's subway is pretty dirty too, sometimes I can see rats and people throw their trash on the tracks. It's very disgusting.

I believe it has something to do with it being one of he oldest subways in the world. There are some parts of the NY subway system that are pretty good. It could be a political thing.

It's old, it's a very busy system, it runs 24 hours a day everyday of the year, there are only two other systems in the world that run 24 hours and two of them are in NYC.
