I was attending school for my BSN and I stop. Nursing is one of those jobs that i said as a child that I want to grow up to be. It is not a Job it an career and you have to have the passion for it. So pick your career wisely because it requires a lot of studing and clinical visits and sleepless nights.

I believe that nursing is a vocation, not just a job, it is almost something that you dont choose to do, it chooses you. I dont think there could be a more rewarding job, it is fast paced, contains a lot of variety, you get to meet so many different people, no two days are the same and the appreciation you get from the patients can be amazing. The money is not great but its not a job that is done for the cash.

Nursing is a field that takes a lot of compassion and the love for what you are doing.THe schooling is very tuff, the work can be very stressfull, the hours can be long and tiring, and it takes a very speacial person to do it.The pay is good, but a real nurse doent do it for the pay,all though their are a few out theirthat do and you can very easily pick them out,any way you at times can be under alot of pressure, dealing with Doctors, exray depts.surgery etc.plus have your full load of patients that are under your care. But it has those times that can be rewarding also,so im quessing that this is what keeps them going, but I cant immagine the hospitols and nursing homes with out these wonderfull folks.

It depends on you. Here is what I like about it:
-Flexible hours. There are all kinds of different shifts out there. I work 10 hour shifts 4 days a week myself. Some shifts pay more, like evenings, nights and weekends.
-Variety. You will never be bored. If you find you aren't suited or don't enjoy one area of nursing, there are many many other areas to try. For example, myself, I don't really like pediatrics, but some people LOVE it. I love the ER, some just aren't suited for it.
-Getting to interact with and care for people. You really have to like people, at least to get to be a nurse. Then , if you aren't so good with adults but love kids, you have options, but to get through nursing school, at least, you should get something out of interacting and caring for others. Nursing is an opportunity to really makes things better for people, and that can be very rewarding.
-The pay. Some feel that nurses don't get paid enough, but frankly, I make more money than I ever thought I would, and I get consistent raises/bonuses. You won't get rich like a stockbroker might, but you will always have a job, and a solid, reliable wage. And the opportunities to make more as a nurse are out there, working as a travel nurse, taking call, or working nights/weekends/both all add up to higher pay. I'veknown nurses to make 6 figures this way.
-Benefits are usually pretty good too.
The downsides:
-Nursing school takes determination, and you really have to want to be a nurse. It isn't incredibly difficult, you just have to be committed to it. It also doesn't take that long, my program was a 2 year associate's degree for RN.
-Some jobs, if you want to work in that area, require call or nighttime work. If you hate that, and really only want to work in that area, then you've got a conflict there. most of us suck it up cause we love the particular area of nursing. Not all areas require this.
-As a new nurse you often have to start out with not the greatest shifts, just like any job, the new guys has to pay his dues.
-Most if not all nursing is teamwork. If you just can't be flexible, work with others, and be able to not just have knowledge but apply it as well, it might not be for you.
-Finally, you have to be able to deal with the human body in all its glory and gory. If bodily fluids bother you, you will either have to hope to get over it, or not become a nurse. There is NO area of nursing that you get to start in that you will be able to avoid one or more of the following: blood, urine, feces, mucous, vomit, and sometimes bone, body tissue, and wound drainage. It's okay not to enjoy these things but if seeing/dealing with them will cause you not to be able to get the job done, then nursing is NOT for you.
- it also helps to be able to prioritize, though this can be a learned skill. Nursing is usually a fairly busy job and so you need this skill to get things done. I didn't have it to start with but they taught me priorities in nursing school. :)
We need nurses. I hope this sounds like something you can do. Good luck to you!
