You might get lucky and others may have done some work on your family tree. Google family members names i.e. "Mary Smith" + "family tree"

You have been given some great information on sites.
Now,please understand something. Information you see in family trees submitted on any website, free or paid, must be taken as clues, not as fact. Most is not documented. You might see the same information by many different submitters but no documentation. This means foolish people are copying without verifying.
You can use the information as clues as to where to write, i.e. county courthouse, churches etc, to get the documentation. Also usually on Rootsweb if you find people in their World Connect family trees, you can probe on a name and get the name and email address of the submitter. Sometimes a submitter might not know anything as the family member they have might just be someone who married into their family but many will. It can be an excellent opportunity to make contact with distant relatives you don't know.
Ancestry.Com is not free but you can get a temporary free membership. They have lots of records and seem to be getting more all the time. Your public library might have a subscription to Ancestry.Com you can utilize.
Also, a very good source is a Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church. They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons.
In Salt Lake they have the world's largest genealogist collection. They can order microfilm for you to view. They are extremely nice and helpful and will not bring up their religion or send their missionaries by to ring your doorbell. Check them out.
Call your nearest LDS church and find out if they have a Family History Center and if so their hours of operation for the general public.
Good Luck!

I use ancestry aid for help on my family tree. It is a forum website and the people on it are very helpful. The web address is www.ancestryaid.co.uk All you have to do is ask a question in the right place and some of the people might be able to help you find some information on your family tree.
Also it is free to join

In addition to all the websites mentioned in other answers, you can always go to the public library and use their genealogy programs. Many of them have www.ancestry.com and others. You can borrow their genealogy books.
Contact the Mormons; they have the largest genealogy sources in the entire world and are adding more daily, with their representatives in Europe and Asia, that I know of.
If you have ancestors from, say, Kentucky, go to google, alta vista or other search engines and search for the Kentucky Genealogical Society (they have listings of some of my ancestors). You can search for genealogical societies in almost any town. Search for family name genealogical societies, such as "smith family genealogy society".
Contact the D.A.R. and other wartime related societies. Don't forget ships records, cemetery records and other such places.
And, of course, the courthouses of all the various counties your ancestors may have lived in.
I have found several thousands of direct ancestors; it just takes time.
