i went to start my van and saw soke and the neg cable had melted right off the battery post any ideas?

There may have been corrosion between the cable and the connector. When you had a large current draw, as in when starting the engine, it created a spark and that generates heat. So much heat that it melted the cable. Just get a new one and replace it. good luck.

the starter may have shorted out, be careful checking it out with a fresh battery and new cables, no clamp ons

well you have a short between your pos and neg wires

Yup--short circuit--buy a new one and rewire it CAREFULLY
