of COURSE you can claim differing amounts..... the W-4 form that you filed with your employer is just a guide used to determine how much TAX you will have deducted from your income..... depending on what you have filed on the W-4 gives the employer the amount you will have deducted in taxes.. you can put ANY number on the W-4-it will either increase or decrease the amount deducted for taxes in your paycheck... When you file your TAX RETURNS, you put
the Actual number of claimed ... for example you may have SINGLE 2 on your W-4 but when you file your taxes as a SINGLE PERSON, you would put Single 1 on your tax form. It's totally legal and fine... just make sure you always have enough taken out for taxes so that you pay less at the end of the tax year.

For states that have a W-4 type of form, yes you can claim a different number on state than on federal. The tax rules for state can be different from the federal ones. so in some cases it would make sense to do so, for example if you typically get a refund from one but owe the other.

The allowances you claim on W4 is different from your exemption deductions on Federal 1040EZ/1040A/1040 and your State tax form.
