The best data concerning comparative deaths pre-invasion and post-invasion were done by the medical journal Lancet. I'm linking the Wiki for this study, only because there are so many links related to the study that it's not practical to include them here.

The Death Squads kept the death rate higher. I am glade you have concern fro the Poor defenseless Iraqi people. Do you self a favor and go to the DOJ web site and look at the US Crime rate just for 2006 over 15,000 American citizens were Murdered and the last time I looked there was no war at home civil or otherwise. So your numbers ar since 2005 and the DOJ are just from the year 2006.You people cry about our military being killed over here and the Iraqi people dieing but you never think about how many Americans loose there life in our own country every year. i am an American Soldier and I am in a combat zone I know the risk and would rather take my chances over here than in down town major city USA.

In 2006 and 2007 (est.), the CIA online world factbook lists Iraq as having about 5 deaths per 1,000 while Germany and Italy have about 10 deaths per 1,000. There are a lot of ways to die. They also are breeding quicker than most countries. There is a good chance Iraqi's population will have thousands more people after the U.S. leaves than before the invasion.

What's your point? Your implication is that the Coalition Warriors are responsible for many of those unfortunate deaths post Saddam. If you really want to know go to Al-Jazeera's web site and ask the same question? They don't know either because they couldn't care less. They see all those who have been killed as just fodder in their agenda canon.
Collateral damage is a necessary evil in the prosecution of any war. Unfortunately, you have many factions from outside Iraq such as the Iranians, Saudi's and other mercenaries who have hijacked the Muslim Faith and twisted a few small sentences of the Koran into a battle against their own, the Muslims.
Enlarge your reading field to include the likes Charles Krauthammer, Fred Barnes, The Nation, The New Republic and a few other publications that tell it like it is.
You've been reading those far left blogs too long.
BTW, Google, Yahoo or got to the Secretary Of State and the Secretary Of Defense web sites to find answers to your pre-Saddam questions. Stay away from Wikipedia, the truth is always altered by some Left Wing Kook Bar.

The crime rate in Iraq was quite low, in the 1990' was running at about 140 to 150 crimes per 100,000 this is lower than European countries and much lower than that of the US. Saddam Hussein was implicated, in killing thousands of Kurds who wanted to separate he was also pretty ruthless in quashing southern Shia rebels. Most of the deaths attributed to him were as a result of the Iran Iraq war about 600,000 Iraqi lost their lives. It should be noted that during the time all this happened US was a good ally who supported him.
Since the start of the current war about 3.5 million people were displaced and some report up to 700,000 casualties-exact numbers are hard to verify. In terms of the crime rate I just wanted to add that Muslim countries have lower rates because of their stand on alcohol and drugs, if you eliminated these two factors from western society our crime rates would be very low also. -personal opinion based on travel experience.

There's really no way to get pre-invasion info that you're asking about. A good source for that info was hung to death (Saddam).
1800 iraqi deaths in August though, that number is enough to give pause.

I know the death rate was not near that high before and part of the problem is our military does not know who the bad guys are....they look just like the people we are trying to help.....

Elsa, I don't have the numbers for an average month under Saddam but I read that article today and wrote my own article about it, called "Media Bias Analysis" in my War on Terror Blog: http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-DfkctJU7dK5B7LcNROoyVQ--?cq=1
The bottom line is that that is significantly down from pre-Surge levels of civilian deaths and I forgot to mention in my blog that those are deaths caused by the enemy targeting civilians. About 4 civilians die during US escalation of force per month and that number too is declining. It does not account for "civilians" whose weapons are removed by others before the cameras get there, nor does it differentiate between those killed by errant US rounds and enemy rounds.
Saddam and his sons (as well as his government) were serial killers with no freedom of the press, so it will be very difficult to ascertain how many they killed in an average month. Many mass graves have been uncovered since he was removed from power. In fact, that was the charge that caused his execution by the Iraqi people.

I don't think many people understand this but the American and CF are not the ones killing the people. Yes they are responsible for some but if you read the articles the Americans aren't the ones putting bombs in cars or tossing grenades or being suicide bombers.
It's thier own people killing each other not the forces over there that are trying to help.

Well you have to remember they do not have systems set up like we do to track these types of things. Also a number of deaths....murders or whatever arent reported or are not all discovered. So whatever numbers you do find plan on them being higher than that.
