The registry is not the problem. If you had 200 unused entries in the registry, it might amount to 2 or 3 Kb of data which is processes in nanoseconds. Besides being highly complex and extremely stable, the registry has a tremendous amount of redundancy built in as a safeguard and repairs itself continuously.
Every "registry cleaner/repair" software that is offered makes you agree that they are not responsible for any damages using their software before it is installed. Gives you a nice warm feeling huh?
Think about this, with all the service packs and fixes constantly being issued by Microsoft, how do these companies know what can and cannot be removed safely? And, why would they ofter this for free?
Look at keeping your disk clean and defraged, reduce the number of startup programs and use the virtual memory correctly and you will get the most free performance.

Here's a very good little FREE registry cleaner program.
It's called Registry Distiller and you can get it free at http://www.download.com Type the name in the search box at the top of the page and download and install it.
It only cleans your registry and nothing else. I've used it and then followed it up by running my purchased Registry Mechan9ic and Registry Mechanic did not find one thing that Registry Distiller left behind.
Also, CCleaner is good to clean up all your "web browsing" remanats, etc. It's not a registry cleaner.
Hope this helps.
