Today in the mail I received a letter from a local mortgage company addressed to two people's names I've never heard of, but the address was mine exactly... I started thinking that someone might have tried to use my info or something so I called the mortgage company... they told me they bought a list of names and addresses of people who have recently applied for a mortgage... so why is this person' s name with MY address? Is this a simple mistake or might it be some sort of identity theft?

I'm the only one who has ever lived at this address... I built this house and I've been here for 11 years.

How long have you lived there? Did you rent or buy?

Taken from your posting:

The word RECENTLY has my focus and attention.

I would discuss this with your local postmaster with the intent of filing a report with the postal inspectors.

You might share this with the local TV or radio station who does consumer reporting.

I would place your credit report on a "Fraud Watch" even if your name was not on or in the letter. Your address was.

I would monitor the county records for filings on your property description. You might even talk to a title insurance company for their advice.

Doesn't sound like identity theft or your name would be used.
They probably used to live at your address. I got alot of mail at a house I lived in for 4 years where solicitors would send out mail to old tenants - after 4 years you'de think they would have their new addresses!! I don't think you have anything to worry about but if you are I would order your credit report just to be sure there aren't any new accounts opened that you don't know about - good luck

It could be a clerical error but to be safe, request your free credit reports thru annualcreditreport.com or call Trans Union @ 1 877-322-8228 to request your reports for all 3 bureaus. There is no charge. You can request it every 12 months. I would also put it on Fraud Alert and that # is 800-680-7289. Better to be safe than sorry later.

It's probably just an old mailing list. The company may have referred to it as "recent" but that's pretty meaningless. Mailing lists are notorious for having errors.

Just throw the letter in the trash with the other junk mail.

Sounds kind of shaky. Go to annualcreditreport.com and check your credit report to see if there's anything there that looks strange.
