I have borderline personality disorder as well as PTSD, and for the past week i have been over the top stressed; i dont know how to explain it other than acute stress.

I was considering going to the ER in hopes of getting some med to help calm me down, i cant eat, cant sleep, cant do anything... My body is in terrible pain.

But i am not going becuz i am afraid of being kept in the mental ward... I was put in the hospital 2 years ago for a suicide attempt, and i am a cutter, i havent cut in a month though so i dont have any recent wounds, just scars...

What are my rights as a citizen, meaning, what would it take for them to put me in the hospital against my will? And what does it NOT take, if that makes sense?

OK let me put it one more way cuz i really need someones thoughts... If i just go in for acute stress, will they give me something then release me, or granted my past, will they keep me? Thank you

The criteria for taking over decisions for a patient are few and understandable , like young age , threat of harming oneself or others , severe non-compliance etc
To me it is obvious that you are still on top of things , I see no reason why they would not give you anxiolytic medicine and let you go .
If they have doubts just show them this question you made here on Yahoo , it is proof you have insight and control over your condition !!

They would have no reason to keep you unless you went in and told them that you were so stressed out that you were feeling suicidal. They can't just keep you because of your past history if they did every time I went to the hospital they would keep me because I've been hospitalized for both medical reasons and for psychiatric reasons. Why don't you make an appointment with your doctor if you have one and talk to them.IF you don't have a doctor than going to the ER would be the best bet but you might be there for a while before they can see you because it won't be considered a life and death situation and those are seen first. But if you have a doctor that would be the first place that I would go for help.

I think the most they will do in ER is examine you, maybe ask a lot of questions, and prescribe a tranquilizer to calm you down. Usually, a doctor has to admit you into the hospital as an inpatient unless you have a life-threatening condition. With hospital space being somewhat limited, short staffed, and insurance companies making people stay for shorter periods, the likelihood of your being admitted, especially against your will, is very slim. Your past admissions have little bearing on your ER visit, even if the hospital has your records, which it probably doesn't, unless it's the same hospital. But even so, I wouldn't worry about that. Just get the ER help you need now. Good luck!

They can only keep you in if you are a danger to yourself or others, otherwise they will not keep you against your will. Hospital beds cost a lot and they would much rather send you home.

If you ARE suicidal or wanting to hurt someone, maybe you should stay there for a little while anyway? If this is not the case, stop worrying and get on down there.

Definately go and get some help.
I hope you feel better soon.

I don't think they will put you in the hospital against your will if it's for acute stress. Just as long as you don't tell them you're having suicidal thoughts or wanting to hurt yourself oranother human being. They might, however, make you take a few days off for rest. I wish nothing but peace and wellness for you... for I know exactly how you feel. If you ever need to talk, I'm here :)

They have probably looked at your past records and are now concerned about your health. Doctors are there to help you and sound like you need help right now. Relax and take the treatments they offer. Worry is only as bad as you let it be. Let someone else do all the worrying for a while, relax and enjoy the stay. Listen to the advice they give you and dont let the stress and depression drag you down anymore. Just be strong and fight this. Work towards getting your life back and enjoy life in the light and stop being dragged back to the dark.

I think most likely if you went to the hospital all they would do is call in a social worker just to check you out to make sure you arent going to try and harm yourself. They might keep for 24 hour observation but that would be about all. I also have BPD and I do know how you feel. You must have a therapist or a psychiatrist, so they would more than likely give them a call on your behalf. Good luck!!!!!

In the US, there are 3 reasons that a person can be held in a ward against their will: (1) Imminent danger to yourself (ie. talk/attempts of suicide, etc) (2) Danger to others (ie threats, violent behavior) and (3) Obvious signs that you are incapable of physically caring for yourself.

If you go to an ER they will evaluate you, but may not give you any medications. Unfortunately, too many people who have genuine disorders have to be turned away for medications in the hospital setting because of others who do it simply for drug seeking. It is completely up to the treating physician what your outcome will be.

They can only baker act you (admit you against your will) if you are trying to harm yourself at that moment, or are a direct threat to others. If they feel like the meds you are on are not helping, they may want to keep you a day or two to ensure there are minimal side effects to whatever they put you on, though.

i hope I could help, I studied behavioral science its dealing with people behaviours and so on....(minor subject in psychology), so I would like to share with you my opinion. In your case, I think you must obey, dont resist by being keep in mental ward. Its not againts to your right as a person by forcing you to get in mental ward. It will only against to your rights or will if you did not doing anything wrong like hurting yourself when you feel the terible pain. But, if you will hurt yourself and doing cutting yourself in pain that's the time you have to put in mental ward to observe you and protect you from pain. Any abnormal behavioral must be help by any medical terms.
