Would you call an agnostic who passionately served his/her fellow man and dedicated their life to charitable work "lukewarm."

(And they did not do this work for approval or praise but genuinely wanted to improve the world)

fundamentalism shows that their own thinking is proof that it is wrong. The whole " believe as I do or you are going to hell " is totally against what they preach is good and is god.

No, such a passionate servant of man would certainly not be lukewarm. The term "lukewarm" describes those tepid Christians who don't get stirred up about God or man.

On the other handthe passionate work of an agnostic might or might not improve the world. For example, Karl Marx was a passionate atheist whose writings inspired totalitarian dictatorships. Ironically, the people who have done the most to improve the world, like the disciples who brought the Good News to the Mediterranean cities after the Resurrection of Christ, were focused almost exclusively on the next world.

Cheers,

I would say that such a person is a kind hearted sort who cares about others, although without Jesus, they are still lost in their sin.

It has been already answered, "lukewarm" refers to the Christian condition of being neither hot nor cold. There is actually two streams of water in Israel which people were familiar with, which stood as an example of this analogy. It is still there, for that matter. One comes from a hot spring and has great mineral properties and the other is from a mountain spring, cold and refreshing - the two come together to blend into a useless mixture of water. Jesus' point was be one way or the other and get off the fence!

Nope. Lukewarm is a Christian believer that doesn't practice or have a relationship with Jesus except when they are in need.
You can not buy your way to heaven on good works. If this person is a great human being they will have to be happy with the rewards they achieve on earth.
An agnostic denys salvation and is neither hot nor cold nor luke warm. They are dead inside.

You do not understand the requirements. It has nothing to do with being a good person or serving man. It has to do with perfections. You must be perfect to get in to heaven. That is God's standard. Nothing less than perfection can come in to His presence. The wages of sin (small or great) is death. Caveat: No man is perfect. So God made a loophole, you can transfer your sins on to a sinless substitute. In the old testament, this was provided via the spotless lamb sacrifice. When Messiah arrived, He became the Lamb for the sins of the world. Thus, accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, and all sins are wiped out.

Colossians 2:14
having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

Psalm 103:12
As far as the east is from the west,So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

Through Christ, we can now come before the throne of God in perfection. Not that we deserve it. It is totally by the grace and mercy of God through the finished work of the cross.

Why would we call them "lukewarm" if they were passionate about their work????

Being passionate about charitable work and being a good person is not, however, what it takes to gain admittance into heaven. ONLY in accepting Christ's sacrifice on the cross as payment in full for our sins can we expect to see heaven. There is ONLY one way and Christ said He was IT. \o/

As you caan see by several answers the term doesn't apply in the same sense. When Jesus was speaking in the spirit to John lukewarness has reference to obeying God. Your example has reference to something else, such as what is called humanitarian work.
But consider this, how can a person know what is good, or what is good for others without guidance from the author of all creation who tells and commands us as to what he wants done and said. A person who goes around doing whatever he wants and deciding what is good based on cultural pc mantras can be very misguided and the helper of wickedness in his or her confusion. Also simply because you think you have helped somebody in a way that you think they need it is nopt necessarily the ultimate reality or good.

For instance think of tyhe spreasd of sexual immorality that is so endorsed and fought for today, do you think that is God's will? You have a lot of people who will argue and fight for "rights and what not but is it all Gods will? As I said a person can be seriously misled thinking he or she is doing good and pleasing to God but rather be repulsive and a worker of abominations.
So just because a person goes around like a busy body savior in his own name and rejecting thereby dishonoring his maker who gave him life, in his own pride, it certainly doesn;t garuntee that person will gain approval or justificastion from God, or that God owes anybody anything. This I believe is the real answer to the question you are asking.
In addition, fundamentalism means we hold certain truths of the Christian faith to be self evident, unnegotiable and unchanging and therefore fundamental as in of essential primary siginificance to the life we hold to be true and from God. This has brought all the faithful in this way into cultural conflict , particulary with those with less respect and fear of God, who think they can change the rule of truth that we hold to fit their desires and thereby redefine what it means to be Christian around their own perverted lusts. These people then try to incriminate and speak evil of those who simply cling to the right, honorable, and traditional truths we hold dear, calling us fundamentalists in a perjorative way, as in dangerously radical. LOL But we ar eno more radical or dangerous than a grandmother who believes in what is right and proper and that things should be done the old fashioned way and not the new way of the perverts. Not because it is old fashioned but because it is right and sacred truth and we are only stewards of this gospel not authors at liberty to change it to suit every wicked inclination.

"Lukewarm" per Revelation 3 only refers to someone that claims to believe in Jesus, but doesn't really. So agnostic wouldn't qualify for that.

I would simply call them agnostic.

They are not followers of Christ. They don't believe His teachings. Therefore, they, like so many others, are lost.

God bless you and keep you
