I was talking to a recruiter one day and he said that after I finish college, I can enlist in the Marine Corps as a Sgt. Is that true? I just want to know, although I hope to go officer.

No, that is a lie, no one , not even a person with a Ph.D can become a sergeant just by having a certain amount of college education.Promotions are earned by merit in how you conduct yourseld as a soldier, your PT test scores, and also on the recommendations of your superiors, which includes NCO's and officers.

I've been a proud member of the USAF for 8 years, and I don't know much about the Marines, but I can't imagine that things would be much different in the realm of enlisting, etc. If you have a degree already, or if you're close to a degree and plan to be an officer one day, then do not go enlisted. The recruiters will tell you that you can cross over easily, etc. But that's a load of crap! I've been an instructor at one of the AF tech schools, and I can't begin to tell you how many students we get that have degrees but came in enlisted because their recruiters lied and told them that it would be easier to join first, then go officer. If you want to become a Marine officer, locate the nearest Marine Officer recruiter. At least for the AF, there are recruiters for officer and ones for enlisted, I would guess that the other services would be the same. Hope that helps!

If your recruiter told you that, it was a bogus statement. In the Marines, the highest rank you can obtain before departing bootcamp is Lance Corporal, and that's an E-3 pay grade. To get that rank in bootcamp, basically you would have to come in as a contract PFC and make Platoon Guide or Honor Grad. Other branches have different programs, but it would be ignorant to give someone NCO resposibilities when they're still a newbie.

It may be described as the Sgt. Maj. must salute the butter bar but only the dumbest of the dumb Lt. would even think of giving him a Direct Order, That would most likely end the Lt. career ,,, saw a Lt contradict a 36 year Mst.Gunny once,,, not a pretty sight !!

I never heard of anything like that when I was in but I have no idea of what kind of programs they have now. If you are getting a four year degree, go get the commission. If you have the opportunity, and you want to be a leader of some of the finest young men this country has to offer, go out and earn your bars.

Not if your enlisting, we had a couple of females in my platoon with a bachelors. They only graduated as PFC's. My suggestion is go through OCS or the PLC courses to become an officer.
