It was until it closed its engineering school in 1973 and all of the prof's moved to Poly Tech in Brooklyn (but there is talk at the TOP levels to merge the schools and bring engineering back to NYU)

I have heard it is. I know someone who got a metallurgical engineering degree from there and rose to a key position as the corporate environmental manager in a fortune 500 company.

He even met the woman he married at NYU so it was a twofer good school for him.
