Yes they can and as you found out ... will.
Make sure you make a full payment on the new bill even if they reverse the fee. (see comments below)
DEPENDING on your history with Capital One ... Since you ask the question, I assume it has been a good one, you can:
Wait until the payment posts on your account. Remember this is a weekend with a US holiday.
Ask them NICELY with a charming voice to forgive the late fee. Point out ... it's the first time and only missed the deadline by a day. Avoid a long drawn out conversation as to the details. You are asking for mercy. You are NOT contesting their right nor ability to levy the fee.
After that:
Don't let it happen again.
Be aware if you had scheduled a payment yesterday, they would have taken it yesterday.
Consider Direct Deposit by your employer. Monitor those payments before you go on line to Capital One or anybody else to make a payment.
Consider a line of credit on your checking account that is ONLY for such situations and you pay it back to ZERO ASAP.
The line of credit cost would be less than either the Capital One fee or a bounced check fee.

Most banks will not give anyone an increase in credit limit until you have a proven record of timely payments and more then minimum. This usually takes a year at least. Once you have had it for a year, no harm in calling and requesting an increase. If your credit history is not too great you may not ever see an increase (Capital One is tight on giving out increases) I know, I have one account that I have used maybe 4 times in the past (going on 10 yrs now) and they never increased it. Good luck and hope this answers your question

Sorry but this is something that REALLY bugs me! "Only one day late" -- why would you not expect to pay the late fee? You were late.
Luckily this won't show up on your credit report -- late payments kill your credit score. But you should be extremely careful to never be late again. Capitol One will up your interest rate to the max.
Set yourself up a budget and plan your spending on a monthly basis instead of weekly. You won't find yourself with a bill due the day before payday and no money in the bank.

I had Capital one and I payed through their web site. The payment was due by 3p.m. on the due date. One time my computer was running slow and the payment got processed 5 minutes late. I was charged that $30 fee. I no longer use them.

Yes they can. Any credit card company can.
You say you now hate capital one, but they were simply abiding by the agreement.
If you have a good payment history with them, you may want to call and see if they will waive the fee.

Hate to tell you that they all do it. If you had put it through yesterda, they would have charge you a fee to put it through the same day. You might call and complain and maybe you'll get a good rep who will reverse it one time only. But this is how they make money.

You were late, they charged a fee. How do you think they are making record profits?
Don't blame Capital One, they all do it. If you don't like it, stop using credit cards. I did and cash is king, life is good.

Yes they can charge you the late fee.
Read your terms and agreement of your credit cards and you will see if you are late more than once your APR(finance charge) can also go up.
Check the information on their website.
I'm also a card holder.

A due date is exactly that. A date they decide upon, not a date you think is convenient. Pay the card off and get rid of it.

Of course you were LATE. But I hope those who destroy theri credit can see what happens afterward when you have to settle for these accounts like Cap1.
Call, if it is not a habit and ask them to remove it this once. Sometimes they will sometimes they won't.
