Don't turn around.
Fixate on something in the future and work to prepare for that. Make it your new obsession to be the best at whatever new things you are trying, or whatever person is in your future, even if that person is still unknown. She (he in your case) is real, she's out there, waiting for you. Be your best for her (him).
You'll find new things to fill the hole in your heart.

That's a really good question. As for me, when I walk away from something or someone is usually cause it doesn't bring anything positive to my life. Even tough, is normal to feel the anxiety to go back to it because you are used to it or it fills up a space in your life. The only way to be able to be strong and move on, is to fill up that space with something else. A new Hobie, new music, a new hair cut, new personal style and even new friends. You'll have to change your routine and be determined and diligent with your goals.

Self-help organizations have become potent allies for people who are coping with mental illness or who care about someone with such an illness. For depression or other mental illnesses, self-help groups include:

National Mental Health Association (NMHA): (800) 969-6642; or, in a crisis: (800) SUICIDE (784-2433)
National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI): (800) 950-6264
Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance: (800) 826-3632

Just keep reminding yourself you're exercising your personal choice to leave the situation behind. I've done that with a few jobs and more than a few relationships, because things weren't going anywhere or I just didn't feel like staying any longer.

Look at what you're walking away from.
Explore what you've learned from the experience.

See where you want to be (happy, busy, ect...)

Head that way and only look back if you need a reminder of
what NOT to do.
